Exhibition showcases King Sisowath’s historic France visit

An exhibition on “The journey of King Sisowath in France: a mutual revelation” at Preah Srey Icanavarman Museum of Economy and Money (SOSORO) will be open for public viewing until April 4 next year. The visit of King Sisowath to France is a significant event in the history of Cambodia and Cambodian French relations. The exhibition opened yesterday.


Blaise Kilian, codirector of the SOSORO Museum, said yesterday that “King Sisowath was the first Cambodian sovereign to travel to Europe and the main consequence of his journey was the emergence of the Kingdom and of Khmer culture on the international stage, particularly in the Western world”. King Sisowath journeyed to France in 1906 at the invitation of the French government after he was crowned King.

 

Kilian said the information presented in the exhibition came essentially from French national archives and various articles published in 1906 by French newspapers and European newspapers.
