What does "Aw" in Thai means?

Featured Replies

I seen they expressively say it when they bumped into people by surprise but don't know what that means. is it just an expression

well, I would have to hear it... but if it only happens when people are bumped by surprise - it sounds like just an exclamation of surprise... oooh, owww, maybe?

In the context you have described,  it means oops.

Think this is what it meant. Thanks!

Perhaps the person actually said ขอโทษ

English translation "sorry", but your ears missed the first, more softly spoken first syllable and the starting T of the second syllable and you did not notice the glottal stop at the end, leaving you with what sounded like aw.

I guess that would explain why many Thai girls are nick-named "Aw"

You mean "Oops, I got knocked up" and she gave birth to girl and named her Aw.

I haven't met a lady called Aw yet, but among my wive's friends there are an Aew and an Oi.

Ten Thai Interjections. Not sure if 'Aw' is here. It would help to see it spelled in Thai.

อ้าว is oh! surprised to see you

Also used when surprise is unpleasant or unexpected, as in: "The price has gone up 30 baht per kilo. Response: Aaw! I need to borrow 200 baht.  Response: Aaw! I can't come to your party. Response: Aaw!

เอาละ Aw la (pronounced like English exclamation of pain) means all right, okay.
