On-going Herpes Medication Available on Social Security?

Featured Replies

Hey All,

Quick question as the title says. Slept with a girl who is asymptomatic, she did not disclose she had been sleeping with a herpes diagnosed person previously and she thought she didn't have it (But didn't get her blood checked) - her further two boyfriends were also asymptomatic - and they are all just casually bombing around having unprotected sex. I on the other hand am not asymptomatic and want to live a more honest life and stop the spread of infection as much as possible.

I went to the clinic, got checked confirmed, Herpes - this was 4 days ago. Since then, i have been on the 5 daily meds i am sure it's some kind of generic of Acyclovir.

The clinic were pretty useless in terms of post-diagnosis guidance, they just smiled, asked for some money and sent me on my way.

I have since been reading furiously on this disease and have learned a fair bit.

It seems the best course of action for me is to continue on with some kind of herpes suppressant - at least for the first year. However, the price of over the counter pills is very expensive.

Does anyone know if the medication is available on Social Security in Thailand? Or is everyone just left to their own devices - no wonder 35% of the population has it, if this is the case........

Any guidance much appreciated, still new to this.

Thanks,

Most people just take the meds when having an outbreak

Thank you. I'm under the impression that continued herpes suppressants brings the chance of infecting others down to a tiny percentage when used with a condom. Where as condoms alone can still leads to high transmission rates, even when you are not in an outbreak.

If I have recurring outbreaks, i will abstain from intercourse at those times.

The other thing you can worry about is genital warts, common here, what you doing about that?

check for creams, less side effects than pills.

There are also another 2 pills, not sure if readily available in thailand

Certainly yhe drug is available under SS for those voveted by yhe scheme.

Normally prescribed only for outbreaks unless outbreaks are quite frequent  But your concern about infecting others is sound so discuss frankly with your doctor.

Just buy generic medication like Vilerm tablets, much more affordable than original brands.

OP  U tink too mut, almost everyone has Herpes. I had the most Ugly outbreak when I was 10, and so did the rest of the classroom.

And that's why "they just smiled". So take your meds, forget it, and don't let your brain mess up your sex life.

Condoms are no protection from herpes. The infectious blisters can appear anywhere on your body and will infect anyone that rubs against them. Avoid all physical contact with other people when showing blisters. No other measures required.

Yes acyclovir, although generic, is not cheap. It's the only anti-herpes drug you can take for long and while doing so you should increase your daily water intake for the sake of your kidneys. I'm not sure taking it as a suppressant is recommended when you are free of symptoms. Taking it for some 2 or 3  weeks whenever you feel an outbreak is underway would be more logical.

Taking the drug for months (or years) on end will, alas, not remove the virus from your system. It stays dormant in your body where the drug cannot get at it.

Just move to Pattaya.

100% of the population there has herpes.

Enjoy you sex life

OP - Confirmed visually only?

Yes.

And buy a whole box of 800mg tablets,  and a pill cutter.  That reduces costs more.

You will need 200mg 5 times a day, or 400 3 times a day.

It is generally only recommended for outbreaks, not as a lifelong permanent medication.

There have been studies on long term suppressive herpes therapy taken for up to 10 years without any adverse effects.

Valacyclovir for Herpes Simplex Virus Infection: Long-Term Safety and Sustained Efficacy after 20 Years’ Experience with Acyclovir | The Journal of Infectious Diseases | Oxford Academic (oup.com)

Valacyclovir (Valtrex) is better than acyclovir for treating herpes because of is its higher level of oral bioavailability.

"Acyclovir is almost completely broken down by the liver when taken orally, whereas valacyclovir has an oral bioavailability level of approximately 55%.

This means that more of the drug makes it into your body, helping to control a herpes outbreak and reduce your risk of transmitting the virus".

Valacyclovir is preferable because you don't have to take it so often.

But Valacyclovir really is expensive. It is easily available in Thailand but probably not covered by SS. Normally, they use Aciclovir here.

Just buy Valtrex over the counter and take it when you can feel the tingle of an outbreak starting. The first outbreak is usually the worst. After that it's only likely to happen occasionally.

The give of love that keeps on giving.

Don't worry, it's manageable.

Take acyclovir with L-lysine.

Expect 2-3 outbreak a year on average.

During an outbreak, stay away from the " crime scenes". You dont want to give it to anyone and open sore may invite more unpleasant guests.

I hope the a vaccine or cure will come soon. Looks promising on the mRNA researches.

A large portion of the Thai populations (33% of females, and slightly lower for males have genital herpes - just the vast majority are either asymptomatic, or the symptoms are so small they don't get tested). Pattaya though...I'm not about that life.

I wish it was on my face......

People think herpes is only contagious when symptoms such as itchiness or blisters occur. Research with dental nurses has shown that you can catch it a few days before signs and symptoms appear. Nowadays, we all wear gloves, of course.
