Daily News reported on a press conference held by the chief of the Region 8 provincial police in Phuket.

Lt-Gen Surapong Thanomjit proudly announced the results of a gun crackdown between October 10th and 24th.

In 363 cases examined the police confiscated 260 regular guns and three war weapons and 1,702 rounds of ammunition.

The massacre at a nursery in the north east of the country was the catalyst for crackdowns on drugs and guns in Thailand, notes ASEAN NOW.

While each region tries to outdo the others in the zealousness of their respective crackdowns, critics will point to the fact that Thailand is awash with guns and such crackdowns are both temporary and window dressing when it comes to facing up to the real issues.

Reports suggest that many weapons are in the hands of ex military and ex police who may have mental health issues.

The crackdown in Region 8 continues until November 8th with a focus on stopping online sales and monitoring social media regarding weaponry.

And the unanswered question, what happens to the guns now??? Recycled???

They are returned to an RTP central store for display on application. A very large number appear to be homemade.

See some serious business out there for any 'rounds' makers. 7 per gun seems a bit meagre !

That , certainly , is reassuring ...

But like all theses other crackdowns , why are they not done all year round.

Why do they have to have a specific window in time ?
