Daily News Thai Caption: Hunt on for speeding driver

Thai media Daily News reported on a horrific accident in Sattahip on Thailand's eastern seaboard last night at around 7 pm.

A 62 year old woman on a Honda Scoopy motorcycle was riding normally along Sukhumvit Road outside the Lotus shopping mall.

She was hit at speed from behind by what police are saying is a Toyota Yaris.

A fender and the Toyota badge were found at the scene.

Pinarat Paengsawang-arom, 62, was found 20 meters away from her motorcycle.

The force of the impact was so great that the rear wheel was detached.

Rescue services along with the Sattahip police went to the scene - CPR was given to the victim who was lying in a pool of blood.

They were unable to save her.

Police had taken witness statements that said the hit and run driver had been going at speed.

They headed off down Sattahip Sukhumvit Soi 69  after the collision.

Police are studying CCTV in an effort to locate the driver of the Yaris.

Some Thai drivers are the lowest scum. Kill an old woman and not even stop to check if she is OK.

Tragic. Cowardly and criminal behaviour by the Yaris driver. Locate them and charge with death by dangerous driving (must have been to cause so much damage). If found guilty, jail for life the only correct sentence.

Very sad and another reason never to get on a motorbike in Thailand.

Definitely drive at your own risk in Thailand.

10 years for killing someone in your car - 30 if you run off

Seems to be the norm here after witnessing a hit and run myself while in a Kerry office on Sukhumvit road.

IMO - Hit and run deserves at least an equal punishment as DUI. I understand that it can be dangerous to stop at the scene, where locals could get nasty, but in that case the driver should report to the police as soon as possible.

I know this location very well. It is a recently constructed and incomplete part of Sukhumvit road (highway 3)  basically an urban motorway with (apparently) 5 lanes in each direction. Although there are not yet any lane markings, and street lighting is very poor .

I don't offer any excuses for a hit and run driver, but I do believe that it is unwise to construct such motorways which allow very fast and very slow moving vehicles to share the road.
