Thailand’s Narcotics Control Board, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, will meet in Bangkok on Tuesday, November 22nd, to discuss proposals made by cannabis legalization opponents to make the plant an illegal narcotic once again under category 5.

 

Cannabis was decriminalized in Thailand in early June of this year but opponents of the decriminalization have been continually stalling final laws for the plant and looking at multiple routes to try to ban the plant once again entirely. Their latest tactic is to meet directly with the Narcotics Control Board to attempt to convince them the plant is a danger to society and make it an illegal narcotic once again.

 

If opponents of the plant’s legalization succeed it could immediately see possession, sales, and cultivation made illegal once again in Thailand and close an estimated thousands of new dispensaries and affect millons of Thais who are now growing and farming the plant at home and engaged in new business opportunities, potentially putting them at risk of prosecution by law enforcement.

 

Opponents of the legalization cite danger to youth, widespread recreational use when the decriminalization was meant for medical only usage, and religious reasons, amongst others, as reasons to re-ban cannabis in Thailand. They claim it is not political despite some opponents openly opposed to Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul and his growing influence before next year’s general election.

 

Anutin was the primary champion of decriminalization of cannabis in Thailand to boost the economy.

Thousands of cannabis shops have opened just in Bangkok, almost like the 7-11 stores there's one or two on almost every street in Sathorn, on Sukhumvit, on Soi 11 and so on....the investment has been made. Food shops selling infused drinks etc. If this happens the revolt will be huge

None, but danger to society does not exclusively mean that someone can OD on a substance. There's lots of other ways a drug can be a danger to society. In my opinion none of those apply to cannabis, though.

There's absolutely no reason someone should be hospitalized because they smoked too much because there's no need for it. They all come around by themselves. It just takes time. Inexperienced drama queens, the lot of them! ????

Don't smoke the stuff, don't take drugs ... no interest interest in socialising with self-absorbed stoners spouting the benefits of weed. For the most part, I find these people boring when they go into their own little bubble when under the influence, While weed may have some minimal medical benefits for the most part it has become a business selling a recreational drug of choice. It creates jobs and as the Thai prime minister stated there is no turning back. Too much money involved. Personally, I don't need the weed "crutch" to enjoy life, I have better things to spend my money on.

Your not supposed to smoke them.

Be it on their heads if this comes to pass. A LOT of people have invested heavily. One of the worst aspects of humanity: people telling other people not to do something. Meanwhile, people are dying daily from alcoholism.

Is this sweetheart of Thai politics aware, that there are (most likely) more weed stops than 7/11 and family mart outlets together? Or is it that some easy cash, which flowed in the past, has trickled to zero? 

Wissanu is quite obviously not aware that the internet can be accessed outside Thailand as well and the latest "idea" of the gifted few shows the absolute incompetence of the lame ducks; how ridiculous can this get? 

I, for one, never smoked weed and never will do so as there is no need for it; yet the legalization took the criminality out of the equation and hence is, to my irrelevant point of view, a good thing. Literally a day after legalizing cannabis one could witness sellers of plants along the streets (in Nong Khai); those super plants grew in a day, what would have taken anywhere else months! Mysterious are the ways of the East ????

The danger to society is the people proposing the U-turn again , not the harmless plant itself .

What about Alcohol ? That is a danger to society as well .

Can't see the NCC adding Cannabis back as a Category 5 "Narcotic".

 

This is simply allowing the opposition to have their say, hear their arguments, and then fashion both replies and eventual legislation.

 

While they could revert to medical-only, I don't see that happening.

 

Eventually legislation will pass, and that will provide more controls - who can produce, who can sell, can anything be marketed, how can they sell, any new taxes, who can buy, who can use, where can you use it, etc. But in the end recreational cannabis use will remain as not illegal, a la sex workers.

thailand does not need a nation spaced out on weed - getting into vehicles and hitting the roads - it is bad enough as it is with drunk drivers

Highly unlikely it will be made illegal again. Another 'go through the motions' meeting to make it look like govt is listening to all views etc. Elections coming next year - the government is really going to upset swathes of voters in the NE (and Anutin)?

 

(Off topic, but they're already putting up electricity next year to THB 5.37/unit - despite which EGAT will still be on track to spend THB 140 billion to subsidise this price. So voters won't be happy about that).
