BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet has endorsed a new scheme to compensate victims of this year’s flooding disaster, with a 6.26 billion baht budget set to compensate more than one million households.

According to Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri, the scheme will cover incidents across the country from May 13 through October 28, or about 1.05 million households in total. He also said each affected household will be eligible for compensation ranging from 5,000 to 9,000 baht, based on duration.

Households affected by flooding for more than seven days, up to 30, will be eligible for 5,000 baht. These include households that suffered inundation for more than 24 hours but no more than seven days, with documented records of damaged property.

Households affected by flooding for more than 30 days, but not exceeding 60, will be eligible for 7,000 baht per-household compensation. Each household affected by flooding for more than 60 days will be eligible for 9,000 baht in compensation.

Compensation for eligible households will be paid by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation via the Government Savings Bank.

Additionally, the Ministry of Interior noted that active floods continue to impact residents in Maha Sarakham, Ubon Ratchathani, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri and Nakhon Pathom. Officials are currently conducting damage assessments in order to provide appropriate compensation for those affected.

Splurging tax payers money again ......... Every year the very same swan song.

The flatlanders see their unpaid TV, unpaid fridge or unpaid microwave swimming by in the sludge passing their houses, latter being under water and, due to the lack of education, cannot work out, why they see the same mess each and every year.

Hydropower and water dam management is not a subject, where Thais pass with flying colours and that is part of the problem!

We've had a house in Khonkaen for twenty-two years. For twenty years it never, ever flooded. Even during the floods of 2011, which affected an estimated 13.6 million people, our house didn't flood.

For the last two years, the house has flooded and each time, the flood coincided with excess water being released from a dam.

Nothing to do with a lack of education on my part and 5,000 baht is scant compensation for someone else's actions.

p.s all our household goods are paid for.

The comment on education is simple; the first time it was a mistake, accident or just tough luck whereas every additional time it is a lack of consequences learnt from the first incident.

While you sit on all-paid white goods it remains a fact, that many locals have lost lots of money and the next floods are in the making next year again - unfortunately. The regulation of dams is no rocket science but familiarization trips to the US and Switzerland have proven pretty useless as nothing got implemented of what the Thai experts were told during their trips. Latter served to explain, why there are no dam-related floods in all those countries ????
