Pattaya — A hit-and-run suspect who crashed into a 74-year-old British pedestrian turned himself in to Pattaya police and apologized to the victim. However, he insisted he did not run away.

 

Pol. Capt. Chonlawit Athipansi revealed to The Pattaya News that the driver of a white Isuzu D-Max pickup that ran a red light and rammed into Mr. Peter Palmer on Monday just surrendered himself at the Pattaya police station yesterday, November 29th.

 

The suspect’s name was disclosed by Pattaya police as Mr. Methanus Leeliang, 61. He was charged with reckless driving and causing harm to others, though Methanus insisted he did not intend to run away. It was unclear, however, why he left the scene.

 

The police then invited Methanus to Palmer’s residence to say sorry to him. Speaking via his interpreting wife, Palmer told police he was run into while crossing Pattaya Second Road at a crosswalk.

Maybe he will be charged who,s know.he said sorry will make a cash gift of some sorts to him.Case pretty much over now.Happened to a friend of mine in cnx thai driver paid out to him and hospital cost then pretty much a non event

I honestly cannot believe that all he needed were four stitches in his head after seeing the video,he must be like Bruce Willis in M.Night Shyamalan‘s Unbreakable? ????

What nonsense, trying to justify the unjustifiable with theses blatant lies. I would have more respect if he simply admitted to a panic attack and a feeling of having to run! 

And what is his response for failing to stop in the first place? 

Living here it really gets tiresome being told dim lies and it is an insult to be expected to  believe such stuff. 

I hope he pays compensation, covers treatment costs and gets some of these new points on his driving licence for failing to stop. 

He could have put the guy in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, or ended it there and then.

Methanus said "Hell, if I'd known he was a foreigner, I'd have backed over him and finished the job." 

If I had been the victim I would have refused to meet him until I saw him convicted, behind bars, a driving ban of 10 years hit on him and a huge compensation pay off received !

 

A sincere apology would have been accompanied by a basket of Chicken Essence.

lucky guy,  as for the e he would have had his license revoked and would be looking at jail time where i am from.  no accountably here.  nothing will change. 

Why do so many lie in this country like a child caught with its hand in the cookie saying they were just making sure the jar was full. Just be honest.

imagine if the shoe was on the other foot and the driver was the foreigner.

i agree.. while it is speculation, I do think charges such as fleeing the scene of an injury crash, should be a mandatory criminal charge, not subject to prior civil settlement.

I suspect it is because there is simply little real-world consequences for doing so… such as giving false statements to law enforcement, falsifying official government documents etc.

 

Ive long been a believer in the notion that laws without properly and consistently applied consequences are just guidelines or suggestions. 

Let's be honest here, Thai drivers are famous for doing the runner after an accident and this guy, and if he wasn't caught you'd never see him...and his apologies as sincere as the Putin will apologies to the Ukrainians...

Hit and run with injuries. This foreigner and his wife, if they have any brains at all. Will threaten police action like criminal charges and court action against the Thai man. As my understanding is if have this kind of accident, then can get several hundred thousand baht in claim against the driver. If they can not settle a monetary amount then the Thai man can be charge criminally and a case for damages and hospital fees can be sued for. The same as a a Thai does to a foreigner that hits them.

I would have thought he would have a massive dent in his truck after a hit like that. Fake apology.

 

Difficult to believe the old guy got away with so few injuries. I thought he was a goner when I watched that video.

.  After he hit the pedestrian he didn’t run away . He actually drove away.  Maybe the driver wants to be specific.  I’m sure the driver will come up with a bogus explanation of what happened

Didn't the guy claim he had no money to make a payment to the victim !!  No third party insurance ?
