Football - In last night's final Group E matches Japan staged another extraordinary World Cup comeback to top the group, overcoming a stunned Spain side 2-1  The Spaniards were fortunate to join them in the knockout stage but Germany crashed out on a remarkable night of drama despite a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica.  

 

In Group F Belgium have  also been knocked out at the group stage as Croatia progressed at their expense with a goalless draw in Qatar. Morocco finished on top of the group after beating Canada 2-1. This now means Croatia will play Japan and Morocco will face Spain in the last 16.

 

Cricket -  Four batters crashed hundreds as England piled up the runs on a scintillating first day of the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Crawley 122, Pop 108, Duckett 107 and Brook 101 not out in England's first Test in Pakistan for 17 years broke records with some breath-taking batting to finish day one on 506-4.

 

Formula 1 - Spanish IndyCar driver Alex Palou will be one of McLaren's Formula 1 reserve drivers in 2023. The 25-year-old will be reserve at all grands prix that do not clash with his commitments in IndyCar, where Palou races for the Ganassi team. McLaren have not said who will fill the role at other times.
