Solar system guarantee

Featured Replies

Anybody know what happens with a 25 year guarantee on solar system, if the company that installs it goes out of business,(stops trading)?

Appreciate replies.

The installers sell, deliver and installs it? They go out of business, right, and nobody wants to take responsibility after that.

Better to buy from a larger company sustainable company, than a local provider.

Once they go out of business that's the end of it, no money. For some businesses that's part of the plan, take the money and run

The only guarantee for the solar system is that the sun will go through the following: a red giant then a white dwarf then a black dwarf.

In other words, any guarantees are hit or miss at best even with the company in business.

Make sure your components have a warranty from the manufacturer,  not the installer.

My installer gave a 2 yr warranty on the 'installation'.  The components come with their own manufacturer's warranty, and have all been around for some time.

After 2 yrs, the installer may charge me to swap out the components, but at this point, hard part was done, and swapping out the components would be kind of easy.  Unplug, unscrew & replace.  Placing the railing for and the panels, along with wiring is something I didn't want to do, or had experience or tools to do.

Swapping them out wouldn't be much of a hassle, sure the wife could handle with a helper for anything heavy ... ????

Will be like trying to get hold of the travellers that installed a dodgy tarmac driveway

No company besides solar panels give a 25y warranty . That is because the technology is very stable and actually very easy . That doesn't mean it can't go wrong , it only means by far most solar panels do produce 80% of their starting power after 25y . If it does go wrong , and like i said it does rarely happen , prob the panel is not producing anything anymore , which is prob not in the warranty . Anyway ,trying to get the warranty after 25y , i'd say , chances are pretty small .

There are a number of reasons a panel will fail.

A breakdown of the Tedlar rear surface. Caused by using a substandard material.

Hot spots caused by poorly soldered junctions.

Water ingress caused by poor manufacture.

Micro cracks of the cell itself, usually caused by installers walking or kneeling on the module during installation.

Just had all mine replaced. Reason breakdown of the Tedlar.

Ouch. How old were the panels? Big name manufacturer?

About seven years. Yes, one of the biggest. All done under warranty.

Actually they replaced 20 x 185W with 15 x 250W and gave me room to add more, so I used even more of the roof and took the system up to around 6kW. I use very little power so expect that even the rather low FIT will see me paying no bills for the foreseeable future.

The original system was put on when NSW offered a 60c per kW FIT. This paid not only all the power bills but also my house insurance, Council rates, water rates plus a few other bills for most of the seven years they were on. So all in all a fantastic deal.

Had one in Aus where the inverter (Solax Power) went south just prior to the 5 year warranty, along with the installer.

Tracked the manufacturer agents  to Melbourne.....called them, explained the problem......they sent new unit no question......paid me to fit the new unit and paid for the return of the old inverter.

Everything sweet as.....new inverter upgrade version of the original.
