A top Chinese health official says he believes China is experiencing the first of three expected waves of Covid infections this winter.

The country is seeing a surge in cases since the lifting of its most severe restrictions earlier this month.

The latest official figures appear to show a relatively low number of new daily cases.

It’s almost like mass containment doesn’t do anything aside from wrecking the economy and ruining everyone’s lives.

I suspect you are wrong on containment, but it can only work when it is done for a short time.  We are a social species, and we can't tolerate long periods of time being isolated from others.  China's lockdowns long ago passed their use-by-date.   China has steadfastly refused to use any of the foreign vaccines as they try to develop their own mRNA vaccine.  That's nationalism, and that doesn't work well in a pandemic.  Save nationalism for some other event, not a public health menace.

The other error they made was trying to vaccinate the working-age people instead of the high risk, which is elderly and those with mitigating health issues.

For the time being, it appears that the only way out of the pandemic is to vaccinate our way out, or to at least vaccinate those at the greatest risk.  With time, this virus may become less problematic.
