More than 8.1 million Thais are poor, including 4.4 million living below the poverty line, according to the latest report by The Office of the National Economics and Social Development Council (NESDC).

 

The report on the poverty situation in Thailand in 2021, released this year, stated that the number of people who are below the poverty line is a decrease from 2020, when 4.7 million such people were recorded. The report attributed the reduction to the economic stimulus schemes, rolled out to ease the financial burden on poorer people.

 

As income is not the only factor that reflects the poverty situation in Thailand, the NESDC has used the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), which identifies four dimensions of poverty; education, healthy living, quality of living and financial stability.

So what happened to those that did not get any of the stimulus money as they had no bank accounts or were not working in a job that allowed the stimulus? were they just not counted?

Article  tactfully avoids giving any number. When increasing minimum wage to 600 Baht seems to be an issue.

It may just mean that they crossed from 'below the poverty line' into the 'poor'category?

I think that the pooor number will not change very much.  The below poverty might be helped.

 

But before you celebrate 600 baht remember PT has to

Win the election

Get it passed in house

passed by the Senate

Stay in power long enough to make it happen.

One-third of adult Thai citizens applied for welfare

 

Applications for welfare have seen a huge jump, with 22 million Thai people requesting a state welfare card in the latest round of registration. That massive figure equates to about one-third of the entire adult population of Thailand. It is a huge jump from the current 13.5 million people now carrying welfare cards in the country.

 

The figures come after the end of the last registration period in October. Deputy Finance Minister Santi Promphat reported the numbers and said that many applying for welfare are likely the result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic hardship that it brought over the last few years.

 

The deputy minister was not shocked by the unusually high number of applicants for welfare. He says that a large percentage of the people who applied were likely from vulnerable groups like those who suffer from chronic illness or may even be bedridden. Another big chunk of applicants may have just not been prepared for the drawn-out economic drop of the pandemic.

And people worry about the plight of soi dogs. Plenty of poor people that need help.

 

While Prayhoot, the fat watchkeeper and their cronies fill their overseas bank accounts with corruption money.  The amount they must have stolen must be in the billions.  That money could have gone a long way to helping the education system and the poor.  Keep the masses stupid and poor is their mantra and therefore under control.

How do you define a poverty line?

Income is not a defining factor.

I cannot make a comment upon the Stimulus package Money that has been issued to the poor of the Country, but a large Commercial Bank recently announced they had lent to " people with no Bank Accounts or History, or a poor Banking Record ) the total of 2,900 Million, Million ( whatever that amount comes too )

Its a large sum for sure.

All the money was lent on the promises that they would be repaid in full ! by the borrowers.

I dont know if this is the Stimulus Package, or a reckless lending Policy by the Bank to continue the Policy of spend and be Deviled

There're not saying but by my standard and having traveled to most areas I'd peg the poor at >60%

The thing that has to be considered is that most countries in the world are going through the same e if not worse.

 

This is an international problem.

Besides that the PTP has not been in power for 8 long years, and the current government doesn't give a damn about the poor, especially those below the poverty line.

Personally I doubt any in power really care about the poor that includes Thaksin,  who like Mao use the masses give them some social benefit reward to side with them

Well he must have done a lot right for them as he won his first term at a free election by the Thai people and at the next free election he did it again and won an overall majority.

And to ensure they look powerful and maintain the prestige of the military - I've seen some of this, the senior and mid level officers live in their own heel clicking giant house many expensive cars and many servants world, all desperate to look good, look important and look like they are wealthy.
