PM Urges Caution Ahead of New Year

BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has advised the public to exercise caution during New Year’s celebrations out of respect for Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati, who has been hospitalized due to a heart condition.

 

Although there are no specific regulations regulating New Year’s Eve activities this coming weekend, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha urged those planning events to be prudent and observant.

 

On December 19, Thirasak Ngoeiwichit, Secretary-General of the Office of the Judiciary, issued orders for agencies under the office to cancel New Year’s celebrations and instead organize merit-making ceremonies to wish the princess a swift recovery. Since then, other organizations have requested that all New Year’s activities be held at their discretion or canceled altogether.

The Pattaya municipality has also canceled its New Year’s Eve fireworks, although music and stalls selling items would still be allowed to conduct business to stimulate the local economy.

 

Sanga Ruangwattanakul, President of the Khao San Road Business Association, announced this week that this year’s New Year celebrations would be scaled back out of respect for the princess. However, tourists are still welcome to dine at restaurants and snap pictures with decorations that local businesses have prepared for the occasion.

I think he probably just put this in the press to get brownie points with the Princess.

yesterday he asked "to be careful", looks like today he clarified a little and escalated it to "be prudent and observant".

He also declared he won't celebrate.

So he is not sure of developments which are beyond his control and urges public to scale down NY parties.

Pattaya major yesterday cancelled  countdown, but today u-turned. Still, some activities before countdown are cancelled. Things are changing rapidly and radically, leaving punters confused.

Khaosan did also cancel countdown event, that is not mentioned in an above article.

There would be likely disappointment to many, who expected this year somehow better then those last 2 covid years

Most particularly, because their corrupted activities and policies have little adverse effect on the general population - which remains largely independent and self-sufficient. 

 

Most Thais have conditioned themselves to be rather indifferent about the usual and historied shenanigans and skullduggery.....unless such delves into their everyday lives [which it doesn't]. 

 

Pay attention to the average Thai community and one will find that the local political comings and goings are much more important to their lives and concerns. It might be extended local mafia, but it's their own extended local mafia.

Check nightclubs have fire escapes.

Do not use the roads particularly on foot.
