January 8, 20233 yr Popular Post by Natthaphon Sangpolsit BANGKOK (NNT) - A new point system for motorists goes into effect on January 9, but police say they will prioritize encouraging awareness for the general public to understand these regulations before they are fully enforced. According to Highway Police Division commander Maj-General Ekkarat Limsangkat, the new point system was adopted to improve traffic law compliance, reduce accidents and improve road safety. Each motorist will begin with a total of 12 points. Points will be deducted for violations of traffic laws, with the most serious offenses resulting in the largest deductions. A driver’s license will be suspended if all 12 points are lost and their license will be revoked if they receive three suspensions within three years. Offenses such as speeding, not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle, or not wearing a seatbelt will result in a one-point reduction. Fleeing the scene of an accident will result in a three-point penalty, while drunk driving will deduct four points from the offender. Gen Ekkara said the system will be applied to every driver, but assures that these offenders will have a chance to reform depending on the situation. While some individuals thought the point deduction for drunk driving was "too little," he stressed that these violators will also face legal charges under the law which include prison and fines as well. January 8, 20233 yr Will losing points increase motor vehicle insurance rates? Hmmm since so many drivers don't have insurance... or drivers licenses... I guess it's a moot point.
January 9, 20233 yr Popular Post Oh goody. I can get caught drunk driving three times before they take my license away. Actually, as I have a motorcycle and a car license, maybe I can get caught three times on each conveyance.
January 9, 20233 yr Popular Post There is no ‘road enforcement’ at all here in TH, as we can all see, and that is not going to change with those new rules. During the (in)famous seven dangerous days around the end of the year the traffic rules would be ‘strictly enforced’, according to governmental announcements in the press. The police’s interpretation of this, as far as I can see, seems to be setting up a roadside tent along main roads, from where passing traffic is observed (as far as eating, drinking and looking at phones allows, of course).. I happened to pass such a checkpoint where they actually stopped some road users, but they waved the two 11-12 year old girls on 2 scooters, needlessly to say without helmets too, in front of me through without hesitation. If strictly enforced, by patrolling roads, I’m sure many people would be found burning all of their points in a single day……..
January 9, 20233 yr Popular Post "before they are fully enforced." These "laws" will never be fully enforced.....no road rules are ever enforced!
January 9, 20233 yr Popular Post Never happen, where I live within 12 months nobody would have a license.

Thais are unaware of other people in the world and hold group conversations blocking escalator exits & blundering into others on foot never mind vehicles!

January 9, 20233 yr Fines and the license requirements will be ignored as usual. There's no effective enforcement here as Thais can't manage to do anything effectively.

January 9, 20233 yr Popular Post How many points for driving without a Driving License? Edited January 9, 20233 yr by Eaglekott
January 9, 20233 yr Hmmm… for new enforcement to have an effect, wouldnt that mean police would have to actually get out and do something? I suggest this is doomed to fail !
January 9, 20233 yr sad to see that this page has seriously become nothing more than a Thai / Thailand bashing site... It makes me wonder just how horrific conditions are back home for so many of these expats who still prefer to live here.

January 9, 20233 yr New Road Enforcement Takes Effect January 9 Now wait for the cops to make up the size of the New donation to Buy back your points so that one doesn't lose any points on Paper.
January 9, 20233 yr What is 'road enforcement'. Does in mean the road is build on properly enforced/reinforced foundations? Some very poor reporting / journalism here, same in many stories/reports
January 9, 20233 yr Bottom line - - What chance is there these new rules will be fairly enforced with no corruption? - No chance, total waste of time.

I refer to this as a lack of spatial awareness and it is something every Thai learns unconsciously when growing through childhood. It surely counts as a major factor in road traffic accidents.
