In evaluating the school, make sure they teach by situational phrases and up front hiragana and katakana instruction.

Just before coming to Thailand, I took a year of Japanese instruction at the University of Hawaii from native teacher and the just published text book was arranged by a chapter for each situation encountered in life and the phrases pertaining thereto.

In the first semester, hiragan and katakana were required and second semester 150 Kanji.

I had studied Japanese in many places, including Japan, over the years so had an easy time with this beginner course, but found the phrase approach very helpful and reflecting the latest teaching technique.

The final exam, after the first semester, was written entirely in Hiragana.

You could learn Hiragan yourself with flash cards before you start the course and get a leg up.

Good luck. Don't worry about the grammar as it is easy and be happy there are no tones to deal with.
