Trump 'won' only because of the 'electoral college' in 2016. The vote was indeed clear then as in 2020.

Both the UK and the US are in no meaningful sense 'democracies' fit for purpose in 21st century. They are literally on a par with Belarus.

DeSantis has presidential aspirations. Imagine edicts in Florida issued nationally. His reason that his edict is to prevent ünsolicited theories that may lead to student indoctrination" is similar to President Xi nationwide push to remove books deemed politically incorrect. DeSantis is leading the country towards authoritarian fascism. He need to be cancelled.

True.  Because DeSantis has presidential aspirations he's playing to a national audience at Florida taxpayer expense while ignoring Florida's needs.

Can't help but be impressed by Mr DeSantis's love of children and desire to protect them in spite of the hammering the fake news media(don't say gay bill lie and falsely claiming protecting kids is against the LGBT movement - totally bizarre false claims) give him. Certainly getting my vote. I trust his judgement over what books are allowed in kids schools, certainly no place for "teachers" grooming the kids or putting strange sexual ideas in their developing minds. I wonder even if the posters that want 3rd grade kids sexualized by their teachers even have young children of their own?

"DeSantis expanded that proposal, saying child sexual abuse — specifically rape — should also be punishable by death, with a minimum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. “These people don’t care. They are unrepentant,” DeSantis said. “... I believe the only appropriate punishment that would be commensurate to that would be capital.”

Amen Sir, keep on protecting the vulnerable kids.

Agree with some of that but not the death penalty. Far too many innocent men killed for lies believed by juries. At least life imprisonment allows for the truth to come out.

You won't get any examples of grooming or indoctrination because it seldom happens and is as rare as hen's teeth among classroom and subject teachers.  Teachers handling a class full of students aren't interested in grooming or indoctrination.  They are interested in keeping their student's attention and maintaining some sense of order in the classroom.

Grooming takes time.  It takes a lot of time.  It requires establishing a personal relationship with a particular child, and it requires isolating the child from peers.  If you want to look at places where children get groomed, then look at people like coaches, priests and ministers and those involved in activities involving camping likes scouts.  I have no intention of tarnishing any of those professions as the very vast majority of coaches, priests and scout leaders are genuinely helping children and are trustworthy.

In the classroom, a teacher gets watched closely.  They get watched for any type of favoritism, and that makes the classroom a pretty poor environment for grooming.

I don't know what type of indoctrination most of the right-wingers are talking about.  I suspect they think that students might end up 'woke' or not be anti-racist or anti-gay.  Or maybe they think they are going to convert them to Islam?  The only time I am aware of those issues coming up in a classroom when some student is being bullied and a discussion as to why we can't call Suzy, Slant Eyes or why calling little Joey a <deleted> isn't permitted.

Much of what is being done is to make the classroom a rather inhospitable place for those who are not what the right wing considers as 'normal'.

LOL. if that were true why are men being convicted of having sex with students and also female teachers, though seem to be given less severe punishment than males?

Going all the way to New Zealand to find examples of heterosexual teacher-student relations.  The topic is about Florida and the grooming this censorship is supposed to prevent is homosexual/transexual/political.

It's too bad the very small minority of folks are offended, but then they always seem to be.

A REAL conservative worthy of REAL respect.

DeSantis is a MAGA fascist, not a conservative.

I don't know if he's a fascist or just an ambitious, opportunistic populist who plays fast and loose with taxpayer's money.

He used Florida taxpayer money to fly a group of Venezuelan immigrants from Texas to Massachusetts in an obvious election stunt.

He uses his control of Florida's Republican legislature to pass laws that get rejected in court, after a robust defense at taxpayer's expense, but which also make him a hero of the right and frequent guest on Faux News.

He spends taxpayer money on environmental issues in Florida but does nothing to restrict the agricultural run-off and over-development that is causing the environmental issues.

He had tough new Category 5 Hurricane building standards passed after Hurricane Michael wiped out Mexico Beach Florida, then had the standards removed two years later when builders and home buyers complained.  I wouldn't care about this if these people didn't routinely ask for billions of dollars in Federal Disaster Assistance every time a hurricane wipes out poorly constructed homes built in hazardous areas.

DeSantis doesn't solve problems, but he's real good at making headlines.

Note the last three words. Anyone or party that does not garner 50% or more has not 'won' the election. They are forced to find partners ensuring that EVERY vote counts. Not only those of the actual minority. This is not the case in the UK or the US. In the US one can lose the election yet still be named winner. But there is no claim whatsoever to be a democracy - both the US and the UK claim to be 'beacons' of representative democracy. In no way are they. They do not represent the desired outcome of the entire electorate, because most of the votes get thrown into the trash can. Some may be happy with that.

The DeSantis book banning storm troopers on a roll.

Like the Chinese "cultural" revolution, the stupidest people have seized power.

It's not only in Florida manlandia. This kind of idiocy is showing up in many places all over the country.

Call the "woke busters": Ron DeSantis sends volunteer army to snatch books from students' hands | Salon.com

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may not want a reputation as a book banner, but that's not slowing down the Republican's efforts to knock as many books out of the hands of students, both college-age and younger. In fact, Florida Republicans' war on reading is only escalating, with the GOP engaged in a full-scale gaslighting project to deny what is clearly a campaign of threats and intimidation to keep teachers from letting kids read.
