GammaGlobulin 1496
Dear Friends, I ask this question for very good reason. I want to know if snakes sleep at night, in Thailand, or do they roam around after dark? What I mean is: I often go out at night. And, since I often wander around at night, in the bushes, I frequently worry that snakes might be stirring after the sun sets. Are there any Herpestologists, here, who might know? I am always afraid of stepping on a snake in the dark, and, especially a snake in the grass, in Thailand, of which there are many. Should I carry a flashlight to look for snakes before sitting down, in the dark, in Thailand, on a stool? I was once bitten by a rat in Thailand. After being bitten by this rat, I had a series of Rabies Injections, which was not cheap, yet not expensive, either. I am not afraid of snakes, when they are asleep. Here in Thailand, I have yet to encounter a cobra, although, in other countries, I have been surprised by cobras when I least expected. So, the question is, IF after dark, when temps begin to cool, do most snakes in Thailand just return to their homes, and become less aggressive? Whether they do or not, I will STILL go wandering at night. However, I am just asking if I will be in less danger during daytime hours, compared to evening hours, while wandering around. If I am bitten by a snake, then I really do not know what I will do. I have no plan for this. I guess I would call a friend, if I even had one. Best regards, Gamma
GammaGlobulin 1496
One of the snakes I fear most, although I have never seen one in Thailand, is the BLACK MAMBA. The Black Mamba is an extremely aggressive snake. The cobra snake is plenty for me. Actually, if you do not know, when confronted by a cobra, they, in fact, do rear up and peer at you, as if they are almost super intelligent beings. Snakes are just so FASCINATING, as we all know. Everybody loves them, for sure.
GammaGlobulin 1496
Unfortunately, there is just not enough antivenin for all of the poisonous creatures in this world. Wish there was.

GammaGlobulin 1496
Medically speaking, in reply to the question posed by the OP, though WE may be asleep, snakes never sleep.
GammaGlobulin 1496
The Snake Never Sleeps: The reason I know this is due to my reading of books such as "The Sot-Weed Factor". and other books, in which a nurse is able to become inseminated by a brain-dead man in a hospital. I REMEMBER: It was The World According to GARP, John Irving. Too many books. Too many snakes. Impossible to even keep track of them all.
spidermike007 61700
Depends on the snake. Trump claims he only need 3 hours of sleep. Though one must question the veracity of that claim. On a more serious note, the answer to this question depends on if the snake is diurnal or nocturnal. Diurnal snakes sleep during the night and are active in the day, while nocturnal snakes sleep through the day and are active at night. GammaGlobulin 1496
I would like to clarify further about, "The World According to Garp". Anyway: "The novel is about the life of T.S. Garp. His mother, Jenny Fields, is a strong-willed nurse who wants a child but not a husband. She encounters a dying ball turret gunner known only as Technical Sergeant Garp, who was severely brain damaged in combat. Jenny nurses Garp, observing his infantile state and almost perpetual autonomic sexual arousal. Unconstrained by convention and driven by her desire for a child, Jenny rapes the brain-damaged Garp once, impregnates herself and names the resulting son "T.S." (a name derived from "Technical Sergeant", but consisting of just initials). Jenny raises young Garp alone, taking a position at the all-boys Steering School in New England." So, you see? Even though one might be brain-dead, STILL, one's snake never sleeps! I highly recommend this book to all those who might mistakenly think they require Viagra.

Brown snakes and green snakes seem to be more active during the daytime hours. However, as you say, I have seen many cobras in the evening hours, just after dark. I once had a dog that would try to attack the cobras around our house. I risked my life to save this darned dog, many times, by putting myself between the dog and the cobra. Strange that I would have given my life for this dumb dog, but, I loved this dog.

A1Str8 2559
No. They don't sleep at all because since they don't have legs, they don't get tired. They basically lie on the ground their entire life except when they're picked up by a bird to be eaten. Then they fly. Before they die.
GammaGlobulin 1496
I would not lay down my life to save any old designer dog. I would lay down my life for a Taiwanese mountain dog, though. Quite a unique breed of dog. Even if they even EXIST these days, which I very much doubt.

Very unfortunately, this particular breed of dog has had its lineage much diluted during recent years. Such a shame, really. You probably cannot even find one, these days. liddelljohn 704
Firstly there are NO Mambas in Thailand only in Africa ,,,but there are many snakes that are active by night , many are poisonous ,, pythons also can be active at night if hungry but its very unlikely one would be big enough to eat you , other poisonous creatures active at night are centipedes, Scorpions , spiders, ,, If walking around at night wear stout strong shoes r boots ,the most common snake bites in Thailand are russels vipers and other leaf vipers that camofluage themselves in leaf litter and undergrowth as they are ambush predators , I am not a herpetologist but when a student i spent 6 months working on a snake farm in Israel collecting snakes for research . another snake species that is extremely poisonous in Thailand is the bar girls you are more likely to be bitten by one of them .
GammaGlobulin 1496
Here is such a very sad story of an unequipped Taiwan dog trying to save students from a cobra in Taiwan. So sadly, this dog was just a lousy mutt, and not a REAL Formosan Mountain Dog. If this mutt had been a Formosan Mountain Dog, then.... No Problemo! There are really so many cobras in Taiwan, and far too few, if any, REAL Formosan Mountain Dogs. So sad. So solly.

GammaGlobulin 1496
50 years ago, in Taiwan, when nobody cared about being PC, one could go to see snake shows. There were comely girls to be had, too, a dime a dozen. After almost 70 years, Formosa has almost stamped out this kind of baser entertainment.
