Sanook Thai Caption: More people settling in Thailand

Sanook reported on a report by Nikei Asia that quoted a real estate agent from Myanmar with 30 years of experience helping compatriots find properties in Thailand.

Somboon said there had been an explosion of interest in buying property in Thailand among Myanmar nationals since the military crackdown began 2 years ago.

Apart from people fleeing the brutal regime they are also affected by the economic downturn created by government action, he said.

Many are buying second properties in Thailand in anticipation of having to flee.

Many are from Shan state who have family members already in Thailand.

In addition people working and studying in Thailand are opting to extend their stay rather than return to their homeland.

Chiang Mai is especially popular.

Meanwhile data from the real estate industry in Thailand suggested that condos purchased by Myanmar people in Thailand were six times as many in the first 9 months of 2022 compared to 2021.

Do Myanmar citizens have special rights to own property in Thailand?  Or are we just talking about condos?

Condos yes. When I checked Google, amazingly I found this:-

"It is a commonly unknown fact that although a foreigner cannot own land in Thailand, he can own the house or structure built thereon. One only has to apply for a construction permit to build the house in his own name"

Isn't that what we mean by leasehold? It is familiar to many people.
