An Italian man tragically died this morning after he was impaled by a forklift in Samut Prakan province, just south of Bangkok in central Thailand, near the factory where he worked as sales manager. He was riding a motorbike taxi when the incident happened.

 

At 10am, officers at Samrong Nuea Police Station were informed of a fatal collision between a motorcycle taxi and forklift at Soi Theparak 58 in Mueang district. Police rushed to the scene with Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescue workers.

 

In front of warehouse 199/23, police found the body of 46 year old Pietro Del Grotto, of Italian nationality, who sustained large wounds on the right side of his ribcage, said police.

What a weird and bizarre way to die, impelled on a forklift of all places.

near-by ambulance not ready to try to save a life!

It's so much easier to meet your maker living in Thailand....more risks taken and more danger present. Must be due another regular balcony flying event soon!

You know I'm not surprised that there are not more forklift accidents/fatalities. 

Many drivers screech around with these 3-10 ton machines like a F1 car. 

Stupid is as stupid does.

Stupid me - I thought ambulances were there to help those injured or medical emergency.......

I drive one. It's common knowledge (where I am) you don't drive around with the forks more than a few inches off the ground. 

What a way to dye, must have had lots off pain.

Wow.  RIP Pietro.  A million ways to die in LOS!  Perhaps there should be a private room for all visitors to the Kindom to enter, just before they pass through immigration, where they can bend down, put their head between their legs, and kiss their ass goodbye.

You are correct mate, forks down as soon as load or shelving is cleared and always before swinging the fork and driving forward.

Slow when exiting buildings, or around blind corners of freight, always sound horn when doing so, always when reversing sound horn, etc, and no one should be riding anything anywhere near a forklift area.

If delivery trucks and utilities are entering yes, but as per standard industrial areas behaviour; drive always carefully and slowly.  

When your numbers up, your numbers up.

 

Your number though seems to be called more in Thailand for foreigners than anywhere else.

Exactly.

Seriously tragic! Health and safety Hub of Asia…not! Mind you to be fair all Thailands neighbouring states are pretty much in the same boat. You really have to keep ‘em peeled here as literally anything and everything is possible. On the whole though I prefer the non-nanny state approach and as such will accept the risks.

There probably are but you won’t hear about them here as there usually isn’t a foreigner involved.

Had the operator had the forks lowered as per normal transit operation, this would have been a really different outcome.. Didn’t see a helmet on him, so who knows where his head would have impacted.. All sad and a freak accident for sure!!! RIP!! 

So many unusual ways to die in Thailand ...... RIP  another avoidable accident

I’ve often thought the birth canal far too perilous for most to undertake without a helmet; I am now convinced of it. 

what was a forklift truck doing on a road with forks up in air......or have i missed something ???

Thailand known for Health and safety procedures not being carried out properly ????

Yes. But Thailand has different driving 'skills' and they are too stupid to realise that what this driver was doing is dangerous. It simply would never occur to them.

Exactly or even parked with forks lifted as in the photo, it appears the forklift operator has not been trained, either way driver and factory have some questions to answer. 

I closed my 3rd chapter of unusual ways to die here years ago but...????

I lost an old 'mucker' of mine in the Oman to an accident like this. Fork lift came round a corner in a warehouse with the forks at head height! Old Pat never stood a chance.
