webfact Posted March 27, 2023 Posted March 27, 2023 A Cambodian national has been arrested by police in Bangkok for using a fake passport to obtain a new bank passbook. The passbook is believed to be for a bank account with 176 million baht in savings, which is thought to belong to a call centre gang. The police were alerted to the situation on March 24 when it was reported to the Thong Lor Police Station. They were told that a foreign national was attempting to use a fake passport to obtain a passbook at the Kasikornbank (KBank) branch at EmQuartier shopping mall in Bangkok. Passbooks are an obsolete transaction tracking method most of the world abandoned with the rise of Internet banking, but for some reason, they remain crucial in Thai banking. ezzra Posted March 27, 2023 Posted March 27, 2023 In Thailand, when you have an account with lots of money in it most likely the bank staff will you or about you, and to come up to the window and ask to withdraw such large sum bank's staff in Thailand will be very weary of you, so no wonder he got flagged down.
RichardColeman Posted March 27, 2023 Posted March 27, 2023 I'd handle it like this. Assuming the guy is low on the tree, give the guy 100,000 baht of the money to dob in the entire gang in and get away or offer a 30 year stretch. 2

pmarlin Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 You need more than a passbook and ID/passport. Thai Banks use biometrics. They have the account holders' picture and fingerprint on record.
