In an unprecedented move, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk on Friday suspended the Food and Drug Administration's longtime approval of key abortion pill mifepristone, but gave the government a week to appeal his decision that could throw access to medication abortions into question nationwide.

The FDA approved mifepristone more than 20 years ago to be used in combination with a second drug, misoprostol, to terminate pregnancies at up to 10 weeks.

Over half of U.S. abortions are done by medication abortion, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights.

Washington judge orders FDA to not suspend abortion pill approval

A federal judge in Washington state on Friday ordered the Food and Drug Administration to not roll back its approval of a widely used abortion drug, siding with a group of Democratic state attorneys general who challenged dispensing restrictions.

Driving the news: The decision directly conflicted with another federal judge's ruling at almost the same time that put the FDA's approval of the drug, mifepristone, in jeopardy nationwide. The developments left the agency in an unusual legal bind and increased the odds that the matter will be considered by the Supreme Court.

Great, again an unchecked SCOTUS gets to tell the FDA how to approve drugs for safe use.

Republicans are so far out over their skis and out of touch with the population they will become irrelavant.

It's interesting to note how the Republicans are keeping quiet about this judge's decision.

Top Republicans—Trump, McCarthy, DeSantis And Greene—All Keep Quiet On Abortion Drug Ban

I think the only Republican senator to vote against his appointment was Susan Collins. Should be a useful issue against some of those Republican senators come the next election.

If, according to hard-line republicans, life begins at conception, and abortion is murder, why not just ban ALL abortions?

And why not charge anyone remotely associated with an abortion with pre-meditated murder?

Why is Gov. DeSantis and Florida going for a six week abortion limit? Are they condoning murder?

Florida Senate passes 6-week abortion ban backed by DeSantis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The Florida Senate on Monday approved a bill to ban abortions after six weeks, a measure supported by Gov. Ron DeSantis as the Republican prepares to launch his expected presidential candidacy.
