A Thai couple riding a motorbike in the wrong direction collided with another motorcyclist in Pattaya. The woman who rode on the back of her boyfriend’s motorbike suffered a gruesome injury.

Sawang Boriboon rescuers rushed to an accident site on Sukhumvit Road inbound to Sattahip near Pattaya Seven School in response to a report at 7:30 PM yesterday, April 9th.

Upon arriving, the rescuers found a blue Yamaha Spark and a black Honda CBR 150 motorbike fallen on the road. The first vehicle, which was considerably damaged, belonged to Mr. Woraphol Sombuakhu, 56, who sustained small scratches. The second belonged to a Thai couple, Mr. Chaiya Insukan, 24, and Ms. Natthida Suksamran, 27.

I see this all the time. Let us risk life and limb to save 3 minutes. Dumb and dumber. Darwin insisted that some species and some members of those species were more fit for survival than others. It would appear the roads here, and especially motorbike riders, are a perfect example of his theories in action.

It takes certain qualities to survive on the roads here. Patience, being very conscious of your surroundings, driving defensively, avoiding excessive speed, especially in town, following basic traffic rules and laws and avoiding being overly stupid, at all times.

70% of the time someone on a motorbike crashes here, it is due to a lack of attention, to the very serious, and very dangerous task at hand. The rest is due to the other person doing something incredibly dumb, like riding on the wrong side of the road, in a bike lane which is flowing in the opposite direction. It really does not get dumber and more ignorant than that.

Many Thais are extremely casual about driving, and seem to have little understanding of the dangers involved, and the need to be 100% focused, at all times. Especially on a motorbike.

I don't see any "gruesome" injury in the picture.  Can you elaborate please?

The third picture in the linked article shows a rather large wound on her leg, though it is very blurry.

About time they made all perps of wrong way driving pay the government back for the costs of the hospital care and full multi million compensation to the victims

and people still want to try to compare driving here to back home. remember the other day those defending the lady who reversed down the road. o this happens at home bla bla bla

I have to agree... the standard here is abysmal.....

A son of the family across the road from me died when he rode his motorcycle into a pole by the side of the road, as Thais have a tendency to do, and ripped half his face off. The next day I saw his brother roar off down the road on his own bike, no helmet, wrong side of the road, having learned absolutely zero about the dangers. You cannot help these people. They are simply too stupid to live. As long as they don't drive into me I really don't care.

You'd think that, once they recover, the pair might not drive on the wrong side of the road again. And I'd lay odds that they will, because if they crash again they'll claim it was just meant to be.

I suspect there is no such thing as a nasty gash at her age.????????

People who care about life and limb, learn from the mistakes of others. Some are so resistant to change, so dense, so stubborn, so lacking in survival instincts, that they are utterly incapable of learning, progressing, moving forward, or improving as human beings. What can one say?

This is a result of lack of enforcement of the laws here in Thailand.

I see every time I go out, drivers going the wrong way, even cars. I see cars and motorcycles deliberately run through red lights.  The motorcycles drive recklessly and often without helmets, loaded with three of more people.

You do not see this behavior in other countries.  They enforce the laws on the books and people knowing they will get stopped obey the law.  Here, I have been in Thailand now for 4 years and I have yet to see a driver pulled over by the police for a traffic violation.  Even when fined, the drivers ignore the fine knowing the courts do nothing to force the payment.

From today:

Going the wrong way! Motorcyclist killed after collision in Phuket

...

Waiting for more and pretty sure x such events unreported outside the tourist hotspots.

You cannot educate pork.  U-turns add many kilometres of wasted fuel & time to even a short journey; it's far easier to drive the wrong way & risk disfigurement.

Oh how unusual. Why didn't they have red lights on the front of their bike? like many I see here.

Maybe it is best to say nothing.

But, always walk against the oncoming traffic.????????

Bike rider on the wrong side of the road hit us 3 years ago, a local drunk. Cops turned up and decided it was out fault and he could ride on the other side, our insurance had to pay for him being in hospital for a week over bit of bruising and he made out he was injured for life and could not walk and work again- MIR scan proved he was lying.

Do stupid things, win stupid prizes.
