BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has emphasized the importance of addressing air pollution in the long run through measures such as reforestation and environmental protection.

 

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and other agencies have been working to expand forest areas, based on the Swedish model. He noted that Sweden was able to increase its forest cover from 25% to 75%. This eventually allowed lumber to become one of Sweden’s top exports, making the country the world’s third largest lumber exporter.

 

In addition, the prime minister urged the public to participate in community forest planting and land allocation for trees.

 

Gen Prayut also stressed the need to address traffic and industrial pollution emissions, and warned the public against outdoor burning, which could lead to legal repercussions.

 

He added that the government has taken measures to mitigate the effects of global warming, such as preparing for El Nino.

 

If the effect of El Nino intensifies, it could cause temperatures to rise by at least 0.8 degrees Celsius, with “Super El Nino” causing temperatures to rise 2-3 degrees above average in some areas.

 

The government has so far made preparations for these potential risks and issued orders to responsible agencies to address them.

If my assistance was requested then I would replace the entire non elected officials.  It is elected officials duty to protect it's citizens, not poison them.  They can easily find out who owns the land that is burning; forest fires are another matter.  With climate emergency growing worse yearly, all governments do nothing and just watch as trees go up in smoke.  I do believe the human race will go the way of the dinosaur and then these greedy officials can choke on their ill gotten gains.

Not more forests please (in Thailand that is)! The more forests, the more clearing.

So the authorities want our assistance, they could start by establishing a hot line where people could text, email or phone in to report instances of pollution.

The could start by making the trucks that exit a land clearing site at km 15 on Bang Na Trad highway, clean their wheel before entering the roadway. At times the dust cloud is like a fog, local residents and businesses are all covered in fine dust. Where is it again , opposite to the Thana City golf course entrance. Apparently the residents have complained many times but that area is Samut Prakan juristiction and the building site is operated by a major finance co/bank, developing a moo ban estate.

Folks have been burning the north for months now....  Where/when have we seen/heard of ANY folks setting the fires facing "legal repercussions"?

 

The government is and has been totally toothless on this issue -- some would suggest, because of the close ties between the government leadership and large agri business (crop growing and burning) interests in the region.

That's so there will be more for the fire starters to burn down next time...

 

With the tech they have now and satellite imaging they could fine the owners of the land and raise the fine until the burning stops, but the mushroom hunters are another story, they burn down the forest. Making the sale of those mushrooms illegal and posting a reward for the picker ..... unfortunately it is not just a local thing it is all across the region, smoke travels across borders. I was in a plane coming from chiang Mai to Udon Thani and the smoke rose to the thousands of feet the airplane was flying at.

I seriously wonder what level of education the PM "graduated" with because he comes across like a dull nine year old. 

Sweden's timber exports have nothing to do with ASEAN recalcitrance ignoring the fires and  pollution. 

ASEAN all want to stop their BS blaming the little guy, and start taxing the insane billions in USD profits their cronies rake in from the food industry, to buy Ag machinery and put farmers through Ag college.

No. The public urges government assistance in tackling air pollution. If you goons were not bought and paid for by big agra, the burning would stop. It is your compromised nature and your unwillingness to put up a good fight, that is the major cause of the air apocalypse we are facing.

At least one NGO is calling it what it is. Field burning, not forest fires is the main cause of bad air here.

This is on big ag business for animal feed and the gov turns a blind eye as it has been reported CP and others make political contributions across all parties to silence them…
