Demand For 712 Baht Minimum Wage Nationwide At May Day Rally

Workers deserve more than just basic existence

That's a great ideology, but there's minimum wage in every country and it's never enough for more than a basic existence. That's why it's called minimum wage.

I am sure all of us had a minimum wage job at some point, but you gotta do something to deserve more.

No way on planet earth is this going to happen. Not saying they are not worth it, or it reflects the cost of living, just that if the minimum wage was raised to this nationwide Thailand would los

  • No chance.   Inflation would skyrocket and manufacturers would relocate to other SE Asian countries.

712 baht per hour, per week, per month...per year ???? ?

So, if the minimum wage doubles, then they'll probably be earning more (if they work the standard 6 day week) than most Thai teachers, nurses, and other public servants.

Then what?

Why even become a teacher or a nurse, when you could just work at 7eleven and make more?

They'd have to double their salaries too, to make it worthwhile.

Then, the price of everything goes up cos businesses want to keep making a good profit, otherwise why do any business at all?

Then, we are back to square one with the illusion of a higher minimum wage.

Yeah let's just go on repeating the same tropes!  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I'm not giving up- I'm doing my own thing, that's for sure.

I doubt you ever did for very long.

Most reasonable people support the notion that a bread winner working 6 days a week ought to be able to reasonably fend for his/her family.

I think too that most Thai teachers are likely on a lousy wage in all honesty.  This is a really low wage economy without much of a welfare system.

Mate- it's not happening anymore- that western capitalist dream- it's just taking money from the poor to give to the rich, and there's not even so many rich people these days, race to the bottom.  It did appear to work, in  my family many decades ago, but you're well behind the times.

Nowadays, men generally can't afford 6 kids and a housewife. Sucks, I know.

With both husband and wife working around minimum wage they will have a household income of probably 20k a month.

With bachelor's degrees or a college course, they could increase that by 50% or maybe even double it.

If two Thai teachers are living together, they will have a household income of 30k-40k a month. Not too shabby, actually.

Same as a farang English teacher bringing home the bacon for his family (with his madame at home, not working).

I don't suppose he gets pity, but that's just life.

What then? Communism?

You answered with exaggerated examples, eg, you countered not with one teacher but two living together.

Life sucks! What then Communism?

Well clearly it will not be possible to go on like this.  I suspect no we will not change - so I'd guess famine, war, suffering on a large scale in all honesty. That's why to be honest I won't get lost in meaningless arguments.

But yes a bit of socialism. Why not? after all we've got socialism for the rich, haven't we- too big to fail and all that!?

Exaggerated?

A two income family is not exaggerated; it's normal.

I said that in response to you talking about families struggling financially, so it makes perfect sense.

Thais generally marry in their own socioeconomic class, hence my example (e.g. a teacher marries another teacher, or nurse, or soldier, or police officer). All these occupations have similar starting salaries.

So, with the two of them working they have a decent household income and decent standard of living.

There's little opportunity of financial freedom in socialism.

They make it hard for individuals to rise up.

It literally goes against their ideal.

I think there's a tendency in economic argument to deny the plight of the poor- clearly you're happier in the middle ground, which in itself is becoming increasingly sparse. Indeed conventional economic thinking may work here, but certainly you can't extrapolate that to the poor in my view- that is why trickle down economics doesn't work.

It's becoming like the olden days, where there were hoards of poor people barely eking out a living.

I suppose you've had a relatively blessed life.
