Because that's the official price that no street vendors stick to because of the price they have to pay their wholesaler.

Days of selling by walking about could be numbered,

Online sales were introduced to reduce price gouging by retailers, who added 25% surcharges on the 80 baht ticket price. Lottery draws are held twice a month: on the 16th and at the end of the month. Lottery players can pick their favourite numbers on the Paotang app and never have to pay more than 80 baht per ticket.

That's great if you've got a Thai ID to register with, the rest of us will just have to keep buying the physical tickets from the street vendors, that's not going to stop in the foreseeable future.

I always tell the vendors , if the numbers are really lucky , why don't you buy them ?

Maybe because they are too poor to buy them? And posters on here want to take 20 baht per ticket commission off them to make them poorer?  Just a thought ????

Lotteries should be banned, I remember when they introduced the National Lottery in the U.K. all the money was going to go to good causes. Turns out you had a 14 million to one chance to win the jackpot.

in general it’s the lower wage earners who buy lottery tickets thinking they can get out of the rat race, where does the lottery money go in Thailand and does it fund anything ?

in one country I worked the jackpot was a rollover several times and the government were concerned people were going with out food to buy lottery tickets !

I thought we had a clamp down on the sellers charging extra and they were told to sell at the official 80 baht price... also some online purchasing facility was available at the official price? All that gone away has it?

Yep, GF buys all hers online for 80b & apparently the guy doesn't take any commission from winnings.

Of course when I want her to buy me a ticket it's 100b - "Business is Business"

Are any clamp downs ever enforced in Thailand ?

This article gives some recent info on how winnings can be paid out that might be of interest:

https://thethaiger.com/news/national/lucky-lottery-winner-in-thailand-banks-36-million-baht

So a person bought 6 tickets with the same number and won 36 million baht, while last month someone bought 19 tickets with same number and won 114 million baht.....

They must be pretty sure they have the winning ticket to buy 19 of the same number

The price is on each ticket.  80 baht. The vendors who are selling for 100 are selling them illegaly at that price. And can be fined by the police if caught.  I pay 80 and the seller makes some commission from each ticket sold.

Can you tell me exactly where you buy your lottery for 80 baht, thanks.

To get last 2 digits is 1 : 100 chance to win 2000 baht, first/last 3 digits 1 : 1000 chance to win 4000 baht. Sounds like pretty good odds to me with a slight chance to win 6 million ????

That's a 20 to 1 payout at 100 to 1 odds, which is terrible in terms of gambling odds. With the other prizes, the overall change of winning will be more like 90 to 1 or so. It's the (incredibly small) possibility of winning $178,000 that drives people to buy them. My back of a fag packet maths says that if you bought a single Thai lottery ticket for every draw, it will take you 42,000 years on average to with that $178,000 prize.

Pretty much any casino table game offers MUCH better odds, getting down to almost 50:50, but obviously not in Thailand.

For full disclosure.... I buy Thai lottery tickets, so I'm a muppet too.

Using that logic it should have taken me 100 tickets to win the 2000 baht for last 2 digits... but did it on first ticket bought ????

Gotta have hope ????

Nope, using that logic you should never buy another lottery ticket, as your winnings > spending percentage will almost certainly only ever drop going forward ????
