snoop1130
Last night, approximately 20,000 tourists attended the famous, or infamous, Full Moon Party on Koh Pha Ngan, which is expected to put tens of millions of baht into the pockets of locals on the southern island. The event was heavily guarded by police, immigration officers and local officials to ensure safety for partygoers as it spins back up to full speed following a few years when the party was closed down. The Full Moon Party is a well-known tourist magnet that takes place on the Gulf of Thailand island of Koh Pha Ngan, located a short ferry ride from it’s better-known (but slightly dowdier) island sister, Koh Samui. The beach party event has been taking place since the late 1980s when a group of bohemian tourists threw a small beach party to celebrate the full moon… inspired, apparently, with some chemical assistance. The event has grown in popularity since then and now attracts thousands of the hipster, beach party crowd from all over the world. Around 20,000 tourists flocked to Thailand’s Full Moon Party on the island of Koh Pha Ngan last night, located in the southern Surat Thani province. The popular event, held on the full moon night of each month, is known for its lively atmosphere and attracts a significant number of young travellers from around the world. To ensure the safety of party-goers, police, immigration officers and local officials were deployed to Rin Beach in tambon Ban Tai of Koh Phangan district. Surat Thani Governor Wichawut Jinto and senior police officers were present at the event to oversee the deployment. The beach, which spans almost 1 kilometre, was filled with many tourists, Bangkok Post reported. Authorities estimate that the four-day holiday period, which began on Thursday, will generate tens of millions of baht for the popular tourist island. The Full Moon Party is a major event on Koh Phangan’s tourism calendar, and its economic impact cannot be overstated. On my travels around the country, I told everyone I met that they should go down there for the full moon but when I got there, I learned that there hadn't been a party for a while, so I sourced a tape player from somewhere and set up on an abandoned platform on the beach. I played a few DJ tapes I'd brought from London and there was only about 20 of us originally, which swelled to maybe 50, but we all had a great night. I went to a couple more later on in '91, which were bigger and more organised but lots of fun too. I finally made it back there in 2005, looked around at how commercialised it had become and left the same day. I saw all the postcards and videos of the last party and the ready made buckets and had no interest in experiencing it like that. Haven't been back since. 1
