Thaksin will Go to Jail If He Returns to Thailand, Caretaker Deputy PM Says

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is currently living in self-exile in Dubai, must serve his sentence in prison, not house arrest, if he returns home to Thailand, caretaker deputy prime minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said.

 

Wissanu responded to Thaksin’s latest Tweet, in which he vows to return home before his 74th birthday on July 26th, saying the former PM must be imprisoned if he did return.

 

Thaksin tweeted that he is willing to go through the legal process in exchange for him to be home with his family and his grandchild.

If Thaksin manages to successfully return to Thailand it would mark the utter defeat of those who have schemed to overthrow democracy since 2006. What a wasted two decades. The only consolation… the eventual victory for democracy is now confirmed as resounding and unequivocal. What a slap in the face for Prayuth, he is going to spend the rest of his days having to watch Thaksin being fawned over and adored by the masses on a scale that he could only dream of for himself. ????

Too many have forgotten or dismissed this reality. 

Sadder yet, we shouldn't be expecting any such criminal charges of the like to be acted upon among the incoming coalition of opposition circles. All will be forgiven and brushed aside.

He never had to leave Thailand. He could have returned any day since (I think) 17 years.

He could have shown up in court and he could have explained to us why he is innocent.

He didn't. He knows he is guilty. And he knows he will be arrested on arrival.

This is why he just talks and doesn't come back.

Thaksin had more than enough time to show lots of evidence for lots of cases that he is innocent. He didn't.

And lots of evidence exist that he is guilty in multiple cases.

 

He ran away and we can't change that in the hindsight. And he didn't show up in court. Should we now pretend nothing ever happened and he is innocent? Is that the signal which we want to give all politicians: Run away and later all is forgiven.

He could have just done his two years way back when and this would be water under the bridge.  He wouldn't be the first Thai politician to serve a sentence as finding ways to send political enemies to prison seems to be a hallmark of third-world and developing "democracies."

They wanted him to 'run away' when they gave him permission to  leave the country for a sport event.

His sister made an escape worthy of the Scarlet Pimpernel when she escpaped to Cambodia from a heavily guarded house when she was supposedly facing serious crimes in the Courts.

If the current lot are arrested after the election they will find they can sidestep justice too.
