Dear TikTokers and YouTubers,

 

Well there is an opening I never thought I would write. Anyway. Thanks for coming en masse to Thailand. Debating if this last sentence is sarcastic. While I appreciate your interest in our culture and your desire to share it with the world, I feel compelled to address a concerning trend that has emerged: a lack of respect for our local Thai culture.

 

Let me be clear: Thailand is not the West. We shower twice a day and we don’t do disrespectful prank videos. We also have our own unique customs, traditions, and way of life that have been passed down through generations. 

 

Our culture is rich, diverse, and deserves to be treated with utmost respect. It is not something to disregard “for the lolz or the likes.” It deeply troubles me to see some of you disregarding this fact and imposing Western perspectives and behaviors upon our society.

Not sure what was wrong with the clip they showed as an example. He was filming and found he just had 80 baht at hand. Hardly the biggest transgression. What a storm in a teacup…

Real message:

 

We here at Thaiger, as members of the Thai "free" press, must self-censor ourselves or we will end up in jail.

 

We implore you to do the same, as freedom of speech/press/expression is severely limited by arcane laws which are often illegal just to discuss.

 

And we are envious of your freedoms.

I will admit that tiktokers and youtubers annoy me. 

 

However, I do take full responsibility because I am simply stuck in the past. I even watch some Thai related youtube channels, but most "content creators" still annoy be. This is entirely my issue because deep down there are a lot worse things like crime, wars, safety to be concerned about. Just like some old guy with a 20 year old, they harm no one and I should not judge.... but I do.

Let's not forget that those Tiktokers and YouTubers do that to make money. And they wouldn't make money if nobody would watch it. So it seems there are enough people out there who watch that crap.

For sure, don't try to control anyone. Let it be like my country, where people are pushed off subway platforms in front of trains, where it is accepted to be able to walk into stores and steal things right off the shelves, to walk around putting your backside into people's faces, to beat them up, steal their cars, and then have the police and district attorneys simply dismiss it all. Yeah, let's make Thailand like that.

So are they suggesting that all people from the west don't shower twice a day?

Because that in it's self is having a pop at western culture and claims that we are all dirty and smelly.

So who ever wrote this article has a problem with what some of us say about Thai culture but is more than happy to rather unjustly have a go at us.

 

 

 

if thailand is so good at everything as these brainwashed nationalists seem to think, if their culture is so rich and unique and full of colorful flavors, then why do they lag behind in almost every aspect of human development? Education, freedom, democracy, infrastructure, free speech, minimum wage, social welfare the list goes on and on.

 

Thailand is still a developing country. please ditch these nonsensical, hysterical beliefs that Thailand is somehow special. It's not. It is bog standard, middle of the road, sunday carvery for two on a discount voucher and probably always will be.

 

Thailand and thai people need to know and fully comprehend their true place on the world stage: that is just above Albania and just below Serbia.

The writer of this article is full of bull<deleted>, and hating on everyone else that is having a fun life! The writer matches the image of " an old, very lonely, and desperate man".

 

The writer pretends that Thailand is the perfect country, where having fun (travel vlogs / pranks) are not allowed ???? and we should have respect for their perfect society and culture??? ????

 

Some quick facts: Thailand has a billion dollar 18+ industry, one of the most corrupted countries, huge discrimination / dual pricing against foreigners, huge income inquality and loads of very poor people, the country is overflowded with drugs, no social security system, and no democraty for the last 8 years.

 

The writer must "accidentally forget" to mention this all right ???? and then the only thing he complains about is some Youtubers promoting Thailand in an informative and fun way? ????

You seem to be triggered by the fact that Thailand allows other foreigners besides yourself.

 

Somehow in your head you imagined that livin' the dream only belongs to you.

 

Thailand does exactly what it wants and there is nothing you can do about it. There will only be more "foreigners" in the future. So start making plans.

He comes across as a self righteous attention grabber who should have gone to the bank to get the money first instead of preying a the Thai girls feelings for 5THB saved, she is just trying to make an honest living.

Yes, Thailand is certainly not the west and has it's own unique culture. Strange that the author fails to mention the sex industry for which the country is famed, a major aspect of Thai culture.

They seem to want an 18th century system of tourism, with visitors being chaperoned by court servants in sarongs, learning to make a 'wai', trying to speak Thai, praying at temples, learning some of the language, cooking, prostrating before their gods and idols, then leaving, in awe of their ancient culture (which doesn't even exist anymore).  

 

Unfortunately that world doesn't exist anymore, even though many Thais would prefer it.

Clearly the Thaiger OpEd team hasn't seen any of sixty-four million videos of young Thai women twerking on TT/YT/IG.

 

Or the gazillion videos of the scantily clad Thai women cooking street food.

Here Here ! Every culture isnt perfect.
That being said, I agree totally with this reporters opinion.
