Thai restaurant in California forced to close amid racist dog meat rumours

The Tasty Thai restaurant in Fresno, California, was forced to temporarily close its doors after racist rumours spread online that the owners were selling dog meat.

Seemingly out of nowhere, a string of negative and nasty reviews about Tasty Thai, a six month old restaurant, popped up on Yelp on Monday night. But the reviews were not about the food.

“It was basically ‘go back to the country you came from you mother <deleted> dog eater,” Thai restaurant owner David Rasavong told local newspaper ABC30.

“These types of disgusting allegations, especially a stereotype, this Asian stereotype that I really can’t believe still exists. It’s hard for me to fathom that it still exists in this day and age.”

Rasavong reported the comments, but they didn’t stop. The same racist allegation, amid threats, was posted again and again.

Confused about what started the rumours, Rasavong did some digging and found a video circulating on social media of a pit bull tied up outside the house next to his restaurant. A woman named Maria Alvarez Garcia posted a video of herself scolding the pit bull’s owner, claiming the dog was close to heat stroke. She suggested the adjoining Thai restaurant was selling dog meat.

“That’s when I knew that triggered it and that’s when just the world just kind of came crashing in on us, you know,” said Rasavong. He said he doesn’t even know the owner of the house next door to Tasty Thai.

Garcia, who filmed the clip, said, “When I saw that, yeah, I got pretty upset because it was cruel and inhuman the way that dog was.”

But it was Garcia who triggered the rumours, with a Facebook comment…

“They have different dogs every week and then they disappear. Sadly, Fresno PD nor humans gave a damn about saving this poor dog. There is also a market attached to this house. Maybe selling the meat too? Disturbing. But hopefully, with this, we are saving a lot more babies. Please share share share.”

When reporters grilled Garcia, she panicked…

Thailand isn't.  Thai good; farang bad.

I see the Fresno police are investigating the occurrence as a hate crime. I guess that now is the US equivalence of Thai defamation law.

The owner might have a civil lawsuit against the person who made the comments.  I grew up in California and the central part of the state is very different than the coast.  IF one drives from Bakersfield to Fresno you might think "is this California or Arkansas".

What is racist? Dog eating exists in Thailand...It is rare now but it exists....and more in other Asien countries.
In my country we eat rabbits and horses. In France the eat frogs....nothing racist on that, just plain stupid gossip.

And eating dogs is nothing worse than eating pigs...both are lovely intelligent animals.

Thailand not racist? hahahahahahahaha.

A Troll post going off-topic has been removed.  Schoolkids being shot is not part of the discussion.

The OP is: Thai restaurant in California forced to close amid racist dog meat rumours

Years ago, a rumor was spread that McDonalds burgers were made from worms. McD's countered by pointing out worms are much more expensive than beef..... end of rumor

Would dog meat be more expensive than pork or chicken? What dishes would cooks try to substitute dog meat? Off menu items?

They never let reality get in the way of a good opportunity to play the race card.

Nothing wrong with eating dogs anyway, carnivores need to be more diverse, no difference between a pig and a dog except the pig is more intelligent ????

Cow, pig, dog, sheep, horse, what's the big deal.

Dog is on the menu in Cambodia too.

Cat In The Kettle

We used to have a joke when I was at uni:

"If your house is robbed how do you know it was an asian student?  All your homework is done and the cat is missing" lol!

Racist and ignorant.

Conflating Thailand with countries that are actually known for dog eating.

Is cat eating really big anywhere?

They do not look tasty.

Saying Thais eat dogs is no more racist than saying they eat snakes. Some of them do. Some of them don't. That race card must be getting a bit worn out by now.

Dog eating is much more a part of the culture in Korea and Vietnam than Thailand.

I stand by my accusation.

Its classic anti Asian hate to conflate all Asians together.

But I get your game. Right wing silliness acting like racism isn't real or a problem.

Try peddling that elsewhere.

Of course yes I understand that Asians being humans are often racist too.

But this is a topic about racist hate in the US.

Maybe.

Drinking beer is much more part of the culture in Germany and Austria than in Thailand. That doesn't make it racist to say Thais drink beer.

You're trying too hard.

No, but it would make it racist, although somewhat odd, to say "go home you ****ing beer drinker". Or to do something that is designed to incite others to make similar remarks.

Dog eating is well know to take place in a certain northern Thai province, and why not, if you eat meat? The old, well they are domesticated not livestock argument is nonsense, both livestock and dogs have been artificially developed by humans, meat is meat. I don't eat any of it but differentiating between animals being worthy of stuffing down your throat or not is just hypocritical.

I understand your POV in general and meat taboos are cultural but there is something about dogs that is objectively different.

While eating dogs is not cannibalism it is kind of cannibalism adjacent.

Great minds discuss ideas!

Different alright as in pests, this humanisation of dogs can be seen all over the internet. People referring to them as babies/ fur babies/angels and family etc, totally deluded dog worshipers, some actually having sex with these filthy animals. Dogs are no different from any other mammals and all the fuss about people eating them as well as other animals is ridiculous.
