Opinion: At 100, Henry Kissinger is still teaching us the value of ‘Weltanschauung'

Twelve years ago, invited to speak at a small gathering at New York’s cultural center 92nd Street Y, I ran a gauntlet of protesters who’d gathered for the arrival of the featured speaker on the main stage. It was Henry Kissinger and I watched in wonder as they gathered to protest “a talk given by the renowned war criminal.”

They were back three years later when Kissinger was speaking there again. This time demonstrators were targeting “his history concerning Timor-Leste (East Timor), West Papua, Vietnam, Cambodia, Chile, Cyprus, Bangladesh, Angola and elsewhere.”

Without getting into war criminal politics, all I will say today is that Hitchens smoked and drank himself to death from oesophageal cancer at age 62.

Kissinger turns 100 tomorrow.

Not seeing your point.

Perhaps it would be easier to make out if you had one.

Here's all you need to know about Kissinger!

A remarkable life story.

I only avoided being sent to Vietnam by having a high draft lottery number so I know who he is.

Kissinger at 100: How his ‘sordid’ diplomacy in Africa fuelled war in Angola and prolonged apartheid

Yet Another Disgrace

On December 7, 1975, Indonesia invaded East Timor. Less than twenty-four hours before the invasion, President Ford and his secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, met with Suharto, Indonesia’s dictator, in Jakarta. Kissinger would later insist that he and Ford had not talked about East Timor while meeting with Suharto (an assertion that would be proven false by the release of a damning transcript showing Ford and Kissinger essentially giving the autocrat their blessing to invade).

(My) Opinion: At 100, Henry Kissinger is a war criminal who still hasn't been tried for his crimes.

Not holding my breath though.

Putting politics aside.

He must be doing something right to make it to 100.

Congrats to him

Living proof of the saying the good die young.

He and his missus attended the Beijing Olympics in 2008.  There was a shot of them on television, they were given some bleachers seats in the direct sunlight, no VIP section for them!  They didn't look very comfortable, the report was they only stayed a few minutes.

Simple: Christopher Hitchens would have been able to respond to Kissinger's turning 100 himself if he wasn't dead.

Brilliant take.

"Dead writers don't write anymore?"

Will nominate this for post of the day.

Thank you. Maybe Mr. Hitchens would be relieved to know that -- in his absence -- all people have to do now under the current topic is click on his URL for an answer.

So I'm guessing the "Legacy" article in the OP does not mention the "Theranos" swindle?

You know what they say, "There's a sucker born every hundred years".

Attorney for Henry Kissinger tells jurors he invested $6 million in Theranos after meeting Elizabeth Holmes

SAN JOSE, CALIF. -- A former estate attorney told jurors in Elizabeth Holmes’ criminal trial that he invested $6 million in Theranos after being introduced to Holmes by ex-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

Daniel Mosley, who counted Kissinger as a client, took the stand on Tuesday in week nine of the trial. He said that he first heard of the blood-testing start-up in 2013 through Kissinger, who was one of several high-profile former government officials on the Theranos board.

Dr. Kissinger explained to me he was on the board of Theranos and that it was a very interesting company,” Mosely said. “He said it would be terrific if you would take the time to learn about the company and give me your views on it.”

Henry Kissinger: Kissinger served on Theranos' board from 2014 to 2017. The former Secretary of State resigned amid questions about the company's practices.

Or that the Cambodian invasion was the result of Nixon being drunk and Kissinger handing it of the Ge. Haig. Oops. War-criming is so easy.

Listen to the man himself. Some of these are painful to listen to so you're warned.

Also a big China promoter. Had Nixon not been elected and had foresight prevailed, we might not have the mess we have today where the rise of China has created huge problems for the world.
