She became romantically involved with an American transgender female. They can be legally married here if the American's passport shows gender male. They can't be legally married if it shows gender female. Transgender Americans are allowed to change the gender on their passport. No, they are a female in terms of gender - sex and gender are not the same. Yes, some people's sex characteristics match their gender identify, some don't.
