British expat’s 1,050km charity walk aims to raise 1M baht for abused children

James Lee Valentine, a 59 year old British expat, has demonstrated the power of determination and charity by completing a 1,050km walk from Pattaya to Phuket in Thailand.

The walk aimed to raise 1 million baht for Take Care Kids, a children’s foundation based in Pattaya that supports underprivileged children who have suffered abuse.

Valentine, who has two children himself, was inspired to help the foundation after a visit opened his eyes to the desperate situations faced by the children under its care. Prior to the Pattaya-Phuket charity walk, Valentine raised 71,000 baht for the foundation by walking 33 kilometres from Pattaya to Jomtien Beach on Valentine’s Day, Bangkok Post reported.

Members of the Hash House Harriers, a group of social runners with chapters throughout Thailand, accompanied Valentine on his walks. The group sees itself as a charity organisation. Valentine was introduced to Take Care Kids in early January during one of the foundation’s fundraising activities in Pattaya.

Following the Pattaya-Jomtien charity walk, Valentine realised that more money would be needed to build a new foster home for the foundation. This inspired him to embark on the 48-day journey from Pattaya to Phuket, raising 200,000 baht in donations.

I've walked from Pattaya to Jomtien many times, but cannot see where they get 33 km from ?

"Valentine raised 71,000 baht for the foundation by walking 33 kilometres from Pattaya to Jomtien Beach on Valentine’s Day,"

A noble cause, but maybe on dodgy ground.

The term “work” in Thai law is defined very broadly, covering both physical and mental activities, whether or not for wages or other form of compensation. Even volunteer or charity work requires a work permit in Thailand.

Maybe he stopped off at every bar in every Soi.?

Let´s see here now. 200k??? Then it´s missing 800k, right?

Moreover, the guy got taken for a fool. Just by walking 33 km, he raised 71k baht. That´s a whopping 2,15k per km. Not bad! When he later walked 968 km, he only raised 200k. Here James only made 206 baht per km. That´s cheap! Should have continued to walk in Chonburi, then he only had to walk 93 km to make same much.

Also seems like he is a relative of Mike Dundee.
