Celebrity son of Thailand’s ‘Mr Clean’ engulfed in crypto scandal

Surabot Leekpai, the celebrity son of a man dubbed the “Mr Clean” of Thai politics, has been accused of swindling crypto investors out of millions.

Investors in the Crypto Ronin NFT Project have filed a joint complaint with police against Surabot, claiming damages totaling 15 million baht.

Surabot has declined to comment when quizzed about the allegations, saying only that his lawyer is handling the issue.

What happened?

Widely known as “Pleum”, Surabot launched the “play-to-earn” crypto project last year.

His credibility earned through family connections attracted many to invest even before the project was fully developed.

When the game failed to launch as scheduled in the second quarter of 2022, investors agreed to wait a bit longer. Suspicions were only aroused after the project owner deleted their account on the Line messaging platform and migrated to Discord.

The final straw came in recent months when Bitkub officially removed Crypto Ronin NFT from its list of registered projects and Surabot stopped responding to their queries.

Not a scam, rather thai style of facing problems: stick your head into sand.

What might happened is development of the project went banana, money was lost, the "game that will make us all rich" didn't begin. And the hysterical panic starts.

Poor management, poor investment and extreme careless greed.

FYI: Binance delisting coins almost daily.

Business went south and he stays quiet, wouldn't call that a scandal, how many investors for the 15M baht, for these rich Thai that is not that much too. Assume he not wanna pay up from private money, hence the lawyer deals with it and he is wise enough to not speak now.

Most projects that actually were scams, took hundreds of millions of baht.

I'm a crypto investor but they should regulate and remove all the Mickey Mouse coins.  NFT is not really a coin anyway.

They invested in the concept of a game as far I am aware, not in actual coins or NFT's itself, to gain value, from the 15M investor side at least. If the market didn't collapse so soon, he might even been successful. Always easy to talk after.

Anyone called Mr. Clean here, is undoubtedly filthy, corrupt and covering up alot of skeletons in his closet. Reminds me of Big Joke. He is the head of the RTP. Is there any possibility he is clean, and free of corruption? How could the head of one of the most corrupt institutions in the land not be corrupt?

Don't disagree - sorry for those that lost.  NFTs are dangerous and I'd never invest personally - there is a case for regulation of some sort.

I remember reading an interview with a rich guy. He was asked why he (the rich guy) lived a humble life and why his son drove a Ferrari. The father said: "I didn't have a rich father".

I think that is a nice summary. Don't think that because a famous father has a certain character that the son must be similar.

Mr Clean  ??  I don't think so. Defending a corrupt brother is hardly clean

RALUEK LEEKPAI SCANDAL

In 1987, when Chuan was parliamentary speaker, his younger brother, Raluek Leekpai (ระลึก หลีกภัย), was charged with embezzling 231.8 million baht (US$9 million) from Thai Farmers Bank (TFB). Raluek had been an executive at TFB. Responding to accusations in parliament, Chuan publicly defended the innocence of his brother. Raluek fled the country, and only returned to Thailand in 2004 after the statute of limitations expired on his crime and he could not be prosecuted. He had been on the run as a fugitive in Taiwan. Raluek has said he might enter politics in order to restore his reputation, although he said he wanted to live a quiet life in his Trang hometown.

Game Development is the high risk biz. $0.5M is quite humble investment, friend works in this venture business and he claims at least a million needed. Yes it might bring helluva return, but still it might flop.

That "golden boy" should explain these things before he took money. Poor management & extreme greed indeed

As this is Thailand, Mr. Clean is a relative concept.

"It's a wise child who knows its own father"

Actually 15m is very little money for such investment. Even then I am surprised that his high society relations n circle did not help him to pay .. just strange

Rotten Moral all over LOS.....:coffee1:

I think you don't understand the concept of securitized NFTs. They are essentially the equivalent of holding a share of a business. Risk is dependent on the project and developer underlying the NFT, not the asset class. Essentially similar to some of the utility tokens where risk is concerned; with the one you depend on price appreciation and with the other you get a part of the profits.

That’s about 441,000 US dollars he’s gonna talk to the head cop who just asked for over 4 million there’s no surprise if they had to arrest all the corruption from all these public officials from the top to the bottom  there wouldn’t be any people in the government and the cop shops

it will be a total mess. Look at the Red Bull kid. He got away with killing a cop, He will scot-free.  TIT
