0.5km Electrical Connection

What would be the cost to install an electrical supply to some land where the nearest supply is approx 0.5km away?

That question is impossible to answer without knowing the geography (we don’t, but possibly you do), this effects the sizes of poles needed, and the supply that is being requested (you will get different answers for a 5/15A supply compared to others up to a 3 phase 30/100A supply, if it is available, the load is relevant to the sizes of cables and losses that will occur with a low voltage supply (220v is low voltage) or if the load is high enough a medium voltage supply and transformer will be required.

1. The PEA connecting to their supply and installing PEA poles and cables, ending up at a new PEA electricity meter outside the plot of land, or

 

2. Someone connecting to an existing meter at the edge of the plot of land and then installing poles and cables further inside the plot of land (perhaps to where you want to build a house)?

I am selling a bite of land so it would be of use the know the worst case for installing an electrical supply as it is bound to come up. Its over flat land following the edge of a mangrove swamp but along an unmade road. The last 100m or so flat solid land. Up to 10 years ago the nearby fishing village wasn't connected so it was a two or three mile route but ten years ago the fishing village was connected so I assume the last 500m is relatively straight forward. This would just be for domestic supply. A worst case would help.

The answer is that it is the responsibility of the buyer, it is nothing to do with you. Anyone could ask but if I were buying I wouldn’t believe your figures. I don’t know is a perfectly acceptable answer.

Cheapest is 500 meters of 25mm aluminium cable, free for bamboo poles or a few hundred baht for eucalyptus ones. Worst case is tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands for the PEA, this is why “I don’t know” is the correct answer.

You have not stated whether this is a PEA installation or a private installation across your own land, or a mixture of both.

 

The difference in cost could be massive.

Provincial Electricity Authority - the people who you need to talk to about getting a supply.

 

Find your local office and go along with a Thai speaker and a Google map of your place which includes the nearest power. They will tell you what they can do for you.

 

Don't forget you will also need water which may or may not be available as a mains supply. Time for a bore ????

As an addendum to my earlier post, you will likely end up having to provide poles and wiring from the meter position (wherever PEA provide it) to your home.

 

PEA often have crews who moonlight, have the specialist kit, and are much cheaper than a private contractor. Our poles were installed on a Sunday, by a crew in PEA uniforms and driving a PEA crane truck, the poles are stamped "PEA". Pay the supervisor, cash of course.
