please don't include thailand in that. an appointed parliament (250 senators) is not the same.

You didn't speak from appointed Senators "anyone who didn't vote or was absent yesterday" that includes 189 MPs from other parties...like BJT who disagree with the politics of MFP

Pita’s renomination for PM hangs in balance, party hopes to remove senators from PM selection

Senator Prapanth Koonmee has insisted that Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat’s prime ministerial candidacy cannot be resubmitted to parliament, after he failed to get the minimum 375 votes needed to approve his candidacy in the first ballot.

Meanwhile, the Move Forward party plans to submit a bill to the House, seeking to amend Section 272 of the Constitution to strip senators of the power to select the prime minister.

Move Forward secretary-general Chaithawat Tulathon said the party will meet with Pheu Thai today (Friday) to discuss their next move, which may include the submission of an urgent bill to amend Section 272.

Citing parliamentary regulation 41, he claimed that a motion, which was dropped in parliament, cannot be resubmitted in the same parliamentary session, unless parliament has not adopted a resolution on the motion.

Not Prayuth, the most recent one.

May 2024

How are senators "chosen" in May 2024? An "election"?

Also, as no PM was chosen yesterday, does that mean the caretaker PM continues in office until one is?

If the pro-democracy form the government, it will be elected senators for sure. In fact, I like them to push harder for a unicameral system with only the Parliament as the legislative house. Thailand had unicameral system before.

Legally the PM candidancy process can run indefinately till a consensus reached. The caretaker government will continue until the the PM is appointed with a majority joint house votes. A coalition party leader even suggest such a step but I don't think that the nation leaders will want the process to dragged on and will definitely reach some sort of compromise to form the new government.

Who said that? Joseph de Maistre (b. 1753), a Catholic philosopher...  went on to argue that authority in politics should derive from religion and that in Europe this religious authority must ultimately lie with the Pope.

It's nonsense. In most Democracies under 50% get the government they want ergo what they deserve.

People in Thailand deserve a properly elected government that does not serve at the mercy of the military. The current electoral farce is a continuation of the military coup in 2014. They don't deserve that, and to suggest they do is an insult to the Thai people.

The senators who abstained yesterday should not vote anymore at least... But in fact the old Government is gone and why have the senators a say in who is the next PM??They should be left out in the voting for PM...It is not their duty.

The EC and senators will claim that this is a way of overthrowing the government , but in fact they are ones who does that, because they don't respect the voice of the people. That would be democratic, but yesterday they showed that in fact they are dictators, not listen to people and deliberately abstain from voting so it would fail

Senators.....Turn up for the money, but when the most important day in their job since it was created arrives, half of them go absent. What a fiasco!

I know there are lots of taksin haters about on the forum but in my opinion the coup performed in the middle of the night while he was out of Thailand gave the military the confidence that they could and would and should take power and use all means possible to keep it...get rid of the hugely popular taksin, get rid of sister, get rid of any and all that dare to challenge the generals....taksin was certainly not perfect but at least he got elected unlike the coup plotters who it seems have now rigged the system to the point that the voters desire is an inconvenient annoyance.  Sooner or later a newer generation of generals will overthrow the current bunch of dictator wannabes as they will want their turn at the trough.  I miss Taksin, with all his faults, he was better than the coup crew.

Even in exile, Mr. T continues to dance in circles around every other political party and politician. Will he cross the Rubicon and return?

The hand picked senators only ever had the one raison d'etre as we have just witnessed.

Still , this bunches tenure expires before the next election. Who will fill their boots when they are gone.

Couldn't he have kept some of his policy intentions to himself until he was settled in office? Assuming he was serious? I'm not saying he has been wrong, but that one thing has been a no-win and red cape to a red bull (no pun intended) with the large conservative elements of the country--even if his proposal is very mild in its extent.

It is sure that Pita made two unforgiveable mistakes before entering the elections. No. 1 was not to get rid of his shares in iTV. No. 2 was to announce as an election promise to amend §112. He could have worked on that once he would have been installed in office and the time was right. The millions of people who voted for him did not vote because of §112. Just my humble opinion.

I'm inclined to disagree.  Most of MF's huge youth vote was because of his promise about 112.

Pheu Thai next…

Pita will probably get a 2nd chance on July 19th. If that doesn't work either, then Srettha will stand for election on the 3rd date. Pita is young and can wait. It is crucial that the coalition that stands for the replacement of the old government sticks together. Who then gets which post is initially irrelevant. The people voted with a clear majority to replace the old government. If the 749 people entitled to vote the new PM do not succeed in complying with the will of the people, there will be most probably unrest.

Blame? 72% did not vote for MFP so these 72% won't be sad.....

MFP secured 38% of the vote, so in fact, it would be 62%.

Then, consider that MFP + PTP together achieved 38% + 28.8% - Close to 70% of the population voted for democratic parties.

Over 72% of the voting electorate chose one of the parties in the proposed coalition. Many of them are PT supporters. The talk in my village shop ( in a PT constituency), was disgust with the senators. Of course they have had bitter experiences before with the Constitutional Court dissolving two of their parties so their sympathy for MF is natural.

They won't gloating, seeing an opportunity for Settha, rather they expressed more outrage and bitterness  at the establishment.

I concur, PT and MF must stick together. If the senators refuse to approve of Settha, their bias will be seen to be intolerable.

If PT break away and form an alliance with Bhumjaithai and Pravit, they deserve to be hammered at the next election.

Thaksin, where do you stand on this? (on the fence).

Any amendment to 112 would have to be voted on in parliament. MFP has only 151 MPs. PT have stated they don't support it. So how on earth would this amendment ever happen? MFP would need at least 250 votes, and that's just in the lower house. So it's a non starter. But people like Anutin and 100s of others use it to vote against Pita or abstain. They should rename them the Brown Trouser Party. Scared sxxxless.

Srettha Thavisin is better than Prawit... and that's who Thailand end up with if not careful

Against the will of the people...

The fundamental error in your reasoning is that it (wrongly) assumes that figure would prefer anyone other than Pita- clearly not the case. There is plenty to support the rationale that he would be most people's second choice. That is why in many votes there is a run off until the candidate with the most support wins.

The thai people hope he becomes the pm,Maube takisim was hoping this would happen. All we can is watch from the sidelines

Pita has more intelligence in his little finger than the 200 unelected clowns whose tenure will come to an end in May 2024 maybe the coalition would be better off being in opposition and allowing a minority government take the reigns they could out vote everything brought forward bringing these cronies down so that there would have to be new elections the MFP would then win by an absolute landslide there would be no need for a coalition of parties .

Please name 1 country who elects their PM/Pres directly.  I personally know of none so what's the big uproar about?
