Russian parliament bans gender reassignment surgery for trans people

Russia's lower house of parliament has passed a new law banning gender reassignment surgery, in the latest attack on LGBT rights in the country.

The State Duma approved the bill, which will also ban people changing their genders on state documents, on Friday.

It now needs approval from the upper house and President Vladimir Putin, moves normally seen as formalities.

Speaker of the Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, said the bill would "protect our citizens and our children".

In a telegram post on Friday, Mr Volodin also called gender-affirming surgery a "path to the degeneration of the nation".

"We are the only European country that opposes all that is happening in the States, in Europe and does everything to save families and traditional values," he said during the debate on Friday. "And we need to understand that there won't be any future if we don't adopt the law, if we don't ban gender change."

Fresh amendments added to the bill on Friday during its final reading included banning individuals who have undergone gender changes from adopting children, and annulling marriages where one party had undergone gender reassignment.

The BBC can no longer be trusted to report on any "LGBT rights" issues, even when the target of criticism is a flagrant human rights violator like Putin's Russia.

They've well and truly jumped on the propaganda bandwagon when it comes to transgenderism. Just read the barely concealed outrage at the news that the a Canadian governor dared to tweak a Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity policy.

Oh no, boys wanting to play on the girls team was no longer automatically, explicitly guaranteed - a true abomination!

Worse still, parental approval was needed for **kids under the age of 16** to claim a right to change their pronouns -- oh quelle horreur BBC!!

There's impartiality forced on them when it comes to overt political news reporting, thank god. So the arrogant cultural extremists transparently try to make up for it in any other way possible.

Oh no... who are we to believe now???

What Putin does is show the next step that American fascists like Governor DeSantis will head to if they aren't stopped in time.

Hopefully all LGBTQ Russian people that want to escape have that opporunity.

Are you suggesting that Russia's Parliament did not pass the law as reported?

If the BBC's report is accurate, what is the point of your post?

Smart move to seduce the U.S. right wing

True.

Putin's main chance is make it until the U.S. elections to see Trump take power again, possibly helped by useful idiot for Putin RFK Jr. running third party.

Thanks for the rant that apparently has nothing to do with the BBC report on the Russian parliament outlawing transgender surgery.

"apparently nothing to do with?" - HA!

Oh dear oh dear oh dear....

Some people just can't put 1 and 1 together when it comes to blatant selection bias in news reporting.
Also, understanding what the BBC is about, as clearly written (as opposed to the stuff you get in the US) takes a tiny bit of sophistication.
Finally, reading the link and seeing the hysterical editorializing in another very very relevant story requires a modicum of intellectual honesty.

Other than that, you're kinda right?!

Thanks for the fact-free rant.

Because you wanted me to respond to your logical fail and refusal to engage with overlooked facts....with....more facts? Get off your high-horse, post less and read more, read widely, and stop hating on podcasts - if that's a still a thing with you.

More of the same.

Scapegoating is useful for authoritarian dictators.

Even the word 'transgenderism' is fake.

No matter how much these people allow their bodies to be hacked around, or whatever hormones they take, they will never be able to become the other sex.

Thus, a biological male can never become a functional woman, no matter how hard they try. Surgery and hormones can take away their ability to function as a man, but they can never get the ability to function as a woman.

All they can do is turn themselves into a grotesque neuter, neither man nor woman.
