Inside McCarthy’s sudden warming to a Biden impeachment inquiry

Speaker Kevin McCarthy in recent weeks has heard similar advice from both a senior House Republican and an influential conservative lawyer: prioritize the impeachment of President Joe Biden over a member of his Cabinet.

Part of the thinking, according to multiple sources familiar with the internal discussions, is that if House Republicans are going to expend precious resources on the politically tricky task of an impeachment, they might as well go after their highest target as opposed to the attorney general or secretary of homeland security.

And McCarthy – who sources said has also been consulting with former House GOP Speaker Newt Gingrich on the issue – has warmed up to an idea that has long been relegated to the fringes of his conference. This week, he delivered his most explicit threat yet to Biden, saying their investigations into the Biden family’s business deals appear to be rising to the level of an impeachment inquiry.

Speaking to CNN on Tuesday, McCarthy signaled that Republicans have yet to verify the most salacious allegations against Biden, namely that as vice president he engaged in a bribery scheme with a foreign national in order to benefit his son Hunter Biden’s career, an allegation the White House furiously denies. But he said that launching an impeachment inquiry would unleash the full power of the House to turn over critical information, mirroring an argument advanced by House Democrats when they impeached then-President Donald Trump in 2019.

“How do you get to the bottom of the truth? The only way Congress can do that is go to an impeachment inquiry,” McCarthy said Tuesday, stopping short of formally moving to open such a probe.

"allegations" are not the same thing as hard EVIDENCE...you know like jack smith is laying on the table to attain indictments??

.....You got any evidence or just more allegations which mean about as much in a court  as a conspiracy theory or a bunch of kids spreading rumors in high school.

Well all you have to do is hope donnie gets reelected and then can pardon himself to stay out of jail then he can assemble his goons to try and get the Bidens....even though he did control the DOJ and FBI and AG office for 4 years and in spite of all their investigations they could not apparently come up with enough real evidence to convene and convince a grand jury to indict anyone....i agree why bother.

Trump wanted his impeachments expunged. They figured out that they couldn't. To appease Trump, the are dangling this out there. T will forget about his expungement wishes.h

This has about the same chance of going anywhere as the rest of the right's nonsense investigations, like Benghazi, Clinton's email servers, Whitewater, fast and furious, etc.

Oh we're talking about Trump now? FYI I hope he doesn't even get the nomination, and if he broke the law he should be prosecuted.

But maybe we shouldn't change the subject so fast, I think we were talking about the Bidens. But I'm sure you still think that Hunters laptop is all just Russian disinformation, and there was Russian collusion with the former President, so there's no convincing you of anything. Open your eyes, stop having tunnel vision, there's always 2 sides of the story.

Hunter's laptop disk image has passed through many hands. Still waiting for the indictments. The best witness MAGA had was is a fugitive felon. That seems not to sway the far right one iota.

Maybe I’m a bit nostalgic but

truth be told! Imop

The whole purpose is to get the evidence in front of the American people ! Its for them to decide!

Impeachment inquiry is pinnacle ,simply because it forces the media to cover it!

Expect a robust debate with witnesses,Graphics, pictures and video highlights!

Your hilarious with your non-stop beating of the same statement time and time again.  Should the GOP decide to go for an impeachment, it will unfortunately polarize the entire country and the former POTUS will loose out on his spotlight to raise his defense funds as he is running low, but then that's going off-topic. McCarthy is not even sure there is truly enough to try and impeach Biden, but thinks there is enough for a probe.  Look at the very last sentence in the link I posted.  "Rising", so not even there yet, and what they have had how many years to try?  Please enlighten us with real proof and not 3rd party politics like the republicans are playing.

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2023/07/kevin-mccarthy-joe-biden-impeachment

House Republicans have been hungry to impeach Joe Biden since they took over the lower chamber earlier this year. But, with little appetite among party leaders for such an over-the-top move, they’ve had to mostly sate themselves with rambling congressional investigations and near-weekly acts of defiance—including against their own speaker.

Now, though, that speaker seems to be bellying up to the table himself: Not only does Kevin McCarthy appear to be committed to expunging Donald Trump’s two impeachments; he has openly suggested that the House probe into Biden’s family is “rising to the level of impeachment inquiry.”

Yes, you're right. I'm just tired of all the arguing, and finger pointing. I think the country is more divided now than at any other time since the civil war. It's a shame we can't just all get along.

Like Rodney King said.......and yes the entire country is coming apart at the seams with the divisiveness and who has stoked this?

Talk is cheap. If there is any real evidence I am sure they would have gone for impeachment by now.

The country is divided because Trump gave voice to racists. Nothing more than that. He still calls Obama "obuma". Is that not divisive? Should an ex president have more decorum?

Well, when one camp's propaganda is that elections have been stolen, despite all the evidence it's a lie, and a majority of its voters believe it, the country is surely divided.

Why more finger pointing? The country will never come together if we don't stop this schoolyard tactic.

That was both camps to be fair. The top democrats spent 4 years calling Trump illegtimate then lost their minds when the tables were turned. Jeffries, Clinton, Biden, Pelosi and many others denied Trumps legitimate election win.

Blaming the other side for doing what your own side did first for 4 years is not logical, is it? But it sure is divisive.

We? Why don't you criticize Trump for being divisive? Before him, hate speech was kept largely out of the public discourse. White supremacist militia groups exploded after Obama became president and rose further when Trump won. And the right wing have the hypocrisy to complain about divisiveness.

More rubbish allegations from you and as usual you have offered NO facts to prove what you allege, As usual just more mud slinging and straw grasping.

You claim it, so you back it up with verifiable proof that can be taken to a court and gain a conviction by a jury of 12 persons, and NOT just your extremely biased opinion.

Are you blaming Trump for all the vile and mostly unfounded stuff the left threw at him? Talk about victim blaming, this is next level!!!

I didn't mention Trump - and neither should you - he's not relevant to the topic.

It doesn't matter whether the Democrats believe it or not.

All that is needed is verifiable proof to take to the prosecution.

You do have that proof I hope.

Nice try but the FD1032 and infamous text ARE evidence. BTW Schiffs dream and the half overheard phonecall in a busy restaurant are not sensible pieces of evidence compared to the bank records, emails, texts, witness testimony, IRS agents investigations etc.

Time to get ahead of this mess, Bill. You have been wrong about this since the start.

Why did the left criticize him.? He's an overt racist. The culture wars started and carried on by the right wing are testament to how they stoke divisiveness.

An FD1023 is not evidence.
