Dear all,

If you in financially dire straights, what do you think of going to pawn shops in Thailand

It's a good way to get cash if you are financially straught and don't want to lose the item.

To pawn what? ????

from cell-phones to silverware and gold chains. some shops can take TV but really cheap.

Once I bought Au-Pt small ring with little diamonds. Turns up Cartier. But they didn't value that - only weight, so I got it for 2500 only. Shop is near Railway station, BKK

Yes, you can pawn many things, but generally they prefer gold - depends on the shop. obviously )

Had a "friend" once... he borrowed stuff from me to pawn them.... So I'd say you can get money from them, and rather quickly, but it would be a fraction of what items are worth normally.

An interesting post. I have never used a pawn shop, but on many occasions when I lived in Thailand, I used to pawn my gold necklace at local gold shops whenever I needed emergency funds, mainly medical bills, as I do not qualify for medical insurance.  Always got "the going rate" and never scammed. I always repaid within 2 months when my 3 pensions were credited to my bank account. I rarely took the full value, just borrowing 15,000 or 20,000 baht using my necklace as security.

There 2nd hand stuff is expensive to buy.

Anything bought from a Pawn shop is by definition at least second hand!
