we all know that thais only give us the time of day if we are paying.

They couldnt care less about us if we arent.

No money, no honey i believe is the popular phrase.

 

How does this make you feel at a deep level?

are you comfortable with it?

 

Do thais also treat each other the same way?

do friendships here revolve solely on materialism? 

 

I know in the west friends are mostly made in our youth, when we all had nothing and came up together.

Here it seems it doesnt work that way.

You never see hi so mixing with lo so etc

seems everything is based on how much money you have in the bank.

Which is strange because there are way more poor people in Thailand than there are rich.

I guess maybe you gotta get out to the villages to meet the genuine Thais, right?

 

I stopped paying for thai people a long time ago.

Because whenever I did I never got any extra respect or whatever.

it was just like it was expected cos i was a foreigner.

 

Now I mostly get the Thais to foot the bill and use the old adage 'well im a guest here so...' 

and do you know what, it works surprisingly well! ????

Despite my limited resources, I have far more available money than any of my large Khmer peasant family will ever have. Within reason I'm happy to help out, tilting however toward the hard workers rather than the lazy good-for-very-littles.

You can try improving your personality and stop judging a whole nation by the actions of only a few.

Oh, and while you're at it, you might want to expand your circle of 'friends'. Whoever you are hanging out with do not seem to be the best representation of Thailand.

How about Thais changing their attitude? Ever thought of that one? They are our hosts after all. I'm sure many foreigners have had similar experiences, especially in the tourist areas.

 

And before you say 'well dont go to the tourist areas then' where do you think they will go for a holiday? Mukdahan?

You can't change others, acceptance is needed if you want to live happily here.

 Throw away those ego masks you are wearing. I guarantee if you go to a temple every morning, talk to the monks and meditate for 30 minutes, you will feel better than starting Thai bashing topics. 

Also, write down 10 things in a  Gratitude journal every day.

It's of no surprise at all after reading bob smiths posting history that he is treated with a level disregard many of us would object to. 

 

Of course, the fundamentally flawed measure of bob's posts are in his projection that everyone else is treated as poorly as he is.

We are not guests, here, Thai's are not hosts.... The are just other people who are nationals of a country in which many of us reside as foreigners or visit as tourists. 

 

This idea that we are 'guests' and should be treated as such is utterly mindless. 

 

As in an nation, residents generally treat each other with an equal indifference, there is no reason we should be afforded anything other than this - We (as foreigners here) are generally treated by Thai's exactly as they treat others who are outside of their primary circles.

I'm quite sure that virtually every negative interaction you have with a Thai is triggered or initiated by your attitude. 

 

Of course, there are those out there who can upset us, but the mistake is in tarring all Thai's with the same brush because we have encountered someone who has annoyed or irritated us.

My GF and I joke about me as the ATM, I guess that means we are both comfortable with the term.

Every Thai I meet for the first time cracks up when they ask for my name, and I reply ATM.

Having said that, ATM's do have withdrawal limits. So do I.
