A friend of mind was telling me about gmail today and how fantastic it is.

Any body out there have an opinion of this service for emails.

I had been using a service provider in Australia with their isp name. But the cost and service has gone to s??t

Have been using hotmail. limited? Gmail sounds good.

Ok guys and gals go for it

Hi

I have Gmail, its great, 28gb for free, nice setup, like it, and it dont close down like hotmail if you dont use it for 30 days

Posted

I also have gmail accounts. they are great.

BTW. the space is only 2.8 GB NOT 28GB!

works great with PoP3 and SMTP

I still have a Yahoo account and a Hotmail account. Since I started using Gmail I have never looked back. It is so much better that I'd even be willing to pay for it.

Yup, gmail, both thumbs up. Has free POP access also, so you can access your mail from outlook.

Configured to run in Mozilla's Thunderbird it's even better......outlook and outlook express :o

SAme here, nothing but Gmail.

I've lost Hotmail accounts and a Yahoo along with sentimantal pictures that were stored on there. :o

Deleting people's mail accounts not used for a little while is ridiculous, few years maybe but days?

Getting to be a broken record, but I like my gmail account too.

Spam always seems to go to the spam box, and I've never had family mail go there, just the occasional business sending me stuff that I did sign up for.

I used to use Thunderbird with it, but now just read it on-line (as I don't always connect from the same PC).

It's even fast for sending attachments, because when you attach a file, it starts uploading it, even while you're still typing the email (and it's even saving the email as you're typing, so if the power goes out, you'll find it sitting in the drafts section when you log back in...)

Nothing to touch it.

I guess everyone loves Gmail! :o

I have been using it since it first came out and yes, it truly is great. It has POP access and thunderbird 3 even comes with gmail preconfigured.

But I find myself preferring the web interface, it's just so good.

Another huge plus is that search actually truly works. Unlike in other email programs where it kinda-sorta someitmes works, in Gmail, you search and you find.

Oh and the spam filter is genius - it is near 100% accurate. It's so good that I now freely give out my gmail address on web pages. I frequently survey the spam folder and every time so far, zero false positives, e.g. everything in there is actually spam. I never see spam in my inbox.

I've been using Gmail for about the last 2 years and it's been very good except for one problem. Downloading any attachments times out at exactly 10 minutes, and this has been very consistant since day 1. When it times out I must start the download from the begining, and can't use a download manager to resume where it had left off. Now, if I get any downloads over 6 or 7 MB I just automatically foward it to another email address so I can download it. Anyone else have this problem? Also, Gmail does not allow any .exe attachments.

Gmail is far better than any other free email service.

I especially love the notifier which sits at the top of my screen while I'm working, and lets me know when a message has come in from it, or any of my other email servers. Even has a the first part of the message flashing up for a few seconds.

I'm not sure if yahoo can do that.

No spam...

The only problem I have is that sometimes attachments don't load properly.

But great service

p.s. you can configure yahoo so u have access to yahoo from outlook, tho u must use a thing called ypops

You can also use Gmail with your own domain name using the Google Apps service. Basically just repoint your MX records to Gmail. Does a fantastic job of filtering spam and we don't have to look after a mail server anymore.

Just another Gmail lover. Been using it for the last 2 years and have never had any problems. Great service for no cost.

I am a gmail addict also and here are some of the features I really like:

1. gtalk-overseas conversations with my daughter at no cost.

2. gmail box and notifier on my screen at all times to tell me of new e-mail messages and whether I have internet connection or not.

3. Documents and spread sheets uploaded to their servers so if I crash, important stuff not lost, like address book.

4. Picasa and web picture book that allows me to see grandchild's latest pics.

5. Auto save of e-mails while being composed so no loss of partial message.

6. Retains all emails and no storage problem as to size in years of use.

7. Homepage that allows all the good tools thereon such as clock, currency converter, calculator, New York Times Headlines or many other newspapers, and a hundred or more other programs to choose from to load on home page such as games, weather, world clock, etc.

These enable you to use Outlook, Outlook Express, Incredimail, Opera, Thunderbird or any other E mail programm. Most E accounts charge a yearly fee for this. With G Mail it is free.

Hi,

I've been a Gmail user for over 2 years and love it. Today for some reason my son's email (he used his gmail address) went to Spam. Fortunately I caught it before I deleted my Spam mail.

Gmail appears to be using IP tagging in their spam filter.

I had the same happen when I sent from my normal address to my son's Gmail, it ended up in his spam folder. Then used my Gmail account to send - same thing. Then used an account on a dial-up with different IP and it went to his inbox.

I'm not sure how this works, but since we have a dynamic IP address (renewed every 24 hrs TRUE ADSL) I guess that if somebody had this IP previously and sent out spam this IP has been tagged by Gmail's spam filters.

Could this be the case?

Anyway, Gmail is great and the way to go.

I have 2 other email addresses apart from gmail. How can I also have what you apparently have - set it up to be notified when there's a new message come in on any of the 3 email addresses?

Best SPAM filter of all along with it's other great attributes. I've dumped Hotmail and Yahoo but still subscribe to Bigpond as I need the email address and it sucks.
