HK 2028: Would You Live There? Your Predictions for HK?

Many here, during recent decades, have spent significant time living and working in Hong Kong.

We have seen Hong Kong change rapidly at times, and often in unexpected ways.

What do you see for HK’s future in 2028?

Would you wish to live in HK…ever again?

Personally, I first landed in HK around 1980, and I enjoyed my first extended stay in the colony, immensely. HK of that time was such a beautiful place to live, situated as it is in the South China Sea, with plenty of islands to visit, and super-cold AirCon almost everywhere.

I was not a tourist in HK. I had family there, a driver to escort me, and HoManTin-living on a leafy mountain road. Maybe what I remember might be thought of as the “Old Hong Kong” of that particular time.

Or, maybe 1980 was not the best year to live in Hong Kong, and maybe the years that had come before were even better, compared to the HK life I myself saw.

But the question many are asking now is what’s in the cards for HK during the next five years?

Will the lifestyle there improve or deteriorate?

Will UK rule of the Colony return to Hong Kong? And is this what Hong Kongers now actually would like to see happen?

What about banking in Hong Kong, and international companies based in HK? Will business just go on as it always has, with minor adaptations to prevailing winds, whatever the direction?

Of course, being an Anglophile, I prefer HK administered by the UK with Hong Konger participation… sort of the way it used to be. People lived well. And people of that day, especially the Hong Kongers, were happier than they now seem to be.

Any thoughts about the future of Hong Kong, between now and 2028?

I'll live there if only if I can find  a "genius" girl. BTW did you find one yet? Mensa awaits!!

That was a GREAT Topic...

While it lasted.

And, to answer your question, I now know, after so many years of searching, I will never find a genuine genius woman suitable for me.

They just don't make them like they used to, I guess.

(I may need to settle for my China Doll, made in Hong Kong, with the voice of Bard. Bard is a genius, you know.)

Reality check: Genius women don't seek 70 year+ old partner.

Unless you plan to move back to HK, what the point of the current topic?

Quality opening posts rather than blabla.

TikTok is against my religion.

I mean that Marxism is a religion.

And, TikTok originated in China.

And China is considered to be a Marxist-Leninist state.

Concerning the Topics you imaged in your comment, would it be possible for you to arrange them in some hierarchical order, based on your reading preferences?...

I just want to know what you like so that I can try to make your reading experience even better.

Wow, Man...

I was wondering the same thing.

Great job he did.

I just wish he had provided comments for each and every Topic.

This is the only way a great writer, such as I, can hope to improve.

You clearly lack a grasp on local events there in the last 3 years..

Please never say never.

The majority of people in HK want to see British admin of the Colony return.

I want to see it return.

I can imagine circumstances which could lead to the return of the status quo as we once knew it before the CCP soldiers came marching in, in 1997.

For someone who once lived there, you seem remarkably ill informed about the current situation.. Please elaborate the circumstances you 'imagine' which could lead to the return of the status quo as we once knew it.

I'm not going to delve into GG, or should I say Marcus Aurelius, pretty sure based on style the same person's posts.

But I do have some comments on HK.

When I lived in Shanghai, it was the early 2000's, direct flights to TPE still weren't possible, so when I travelled to our office in Taiwan, it was always a flight to HKG on a Friday night, spend the weekend then on to TPE Monday morning.

At that time it was impossible to tell the difference from the previous colonial rule to Beijing.

South China Morning Post was still a real newspaper, freedom of speech was there, I could access everything on the internet, which I couldn't do back at home in Shanghai, and all in all it was an idyllic place, and I still have many friends there from those days.

Back then it was just as China was joining the WTO and the thought was, mine included that China would end up looking like Hong Kong.

Well fast forward 25 years, and I and most others were wrong.

It turns out Hong Kong is turning out to look like any other mainline Chinese city.

Several of my friends have already left. Some had BNO's and left for the UK. Others to Taiwan, Canada or the US.

I haven't been there for probably 10 years at this point, but I'm told I wouldn't even recognize the place.

As for return to colonial rule, thats just nonsense, what Hong Konger's want is independence and become a city State like Singapore.

But thats not gonna happen, so it's a rapid slide to being part of Guangdong
