Apsara to deal with aggressive Angkor monkeys

Featured Replies

Apsara National Authority is seeking help from wildlife experts to deal with aggressive monkeys that are attacking tourists at Angkor Archaeological Park. The authority is calling on tourists to stop feeding macaque monkeys in the park area to avoid risking harm to themselves while visiting. The plan to take care of the monkeys followed after two tourists were attacked in two separate incidents while visiting Angkor Wat.

On September 6, a monkey bit a middle-aged American tourist. The man sustained injuries to the right side of his neck from the attack while he was visiting the Bayon temple area. Another incident of aggressive monkeys involved a 39-year-old Thai tourist on August 25.

Apsara Authority provided emergency treatment onsite by washing the wounds and advising the victims to obtain vaccinations as a precautionary measure against disease and infection. Deputy Director General of Apsara Authority Kim Sothin said that troublesome monkeys living in the Angkor area pose a threat to tourists.
