A terrifying escape from death unfolded in Nakhon Sawan province when a crane lorry’s brakes failed, causing the vehicle to veer off, hitting a roadside shop, and causing severe damage.

 

The incident, which took place yesterday, reportedly resulted in a noodle shop owner being scalded by boiling water. The driver insisted that he hadn’t consumed alcohol prior to the incident.

 

The crane, belonging to a company, was found parked across the road after it had ploughed into a roadside pork and rice shop, causing extensive damage. Additionally, two other nearby shops, a noodle shop, and a grocery store, as well as a car repair garage and three motorcycles, were also heavily damaged.

 

One casualty was reported, a woman who owned the noodle shop suffered burns from hot water all over her body. She was given immediate first aid by the rescue team before being taken to Sawan Pracharak Hospital.

 

The 45 year old driver, Phiphatt (surname withheld), did not flee the scene. He reported that he was returning the crane to the company after completing work in Chum Saeng district, Nakhon Sawan. Upon reaching the accident site, he discovered that he was unable to control the vehicle due to a sudden failure of the vehicle’s air system, which controls the brakes and transmission.

That's funny, I  thought

no air and the brake comes on.

But Thailand is special.

Or is it only the parking brake side that works like that ?

 

Should be good for another year without maintenance!   

In my 37 years as a truck mechanic I can't recall a truck accident with loss of air pressure causing an accident. In the event of a total lack of air pressure the brakes are actuated. But this is Thailand and we know it is L.O.S.

Failure of the air system would put the brakes ON and the audio low pressure and gauges would tell you air pressure has dropped, (both of which are never tested, when I have witnessed HGV testing here.

.  The Air pressure keeps the brakes off!

No both work like that, but he also said transmission failure which could mean an air clutch fail, thus changing gear would be impossible. That's what gauges and alarms are for.

If the air system fails brakes are automatically applied.

You need air pressure to release them?

Unless the system has been tampered with?

I couldn't agree more, but are you are assuming the crane had normal working brakes

Over sized brake drums from too much machining and worn brake shoes would send the rig down the road to oblivion such as here
