AYUTTHAYA - A specialized task force, in collaboration with related agencies and consisting of over 100 personnel, was mobilized for a dawn raid on a migrant worker camp, following persistent complaints from local residents.

Home to over a thousand workers, primarily from Myanmar and Cambodia, the camp had been a source of escalating issues including theft, disputes, and the discharge of wastewater into local canals, reported Thai Rath.

Local authorities, led by key figures from the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province, conducted the search amidst growing unrest among neighboring residents.

Complaints highlighted the camp's severe lack of sanitation, leading to foul-smelling natural water sources, and uncontrolled consumption of utilities. Numerous incidents of altercations and theft of agricultural produce have been reported, yet prior complaints were met with limited action from responsible agencies.

The camp, seemingly under the radar, was exposed to have over 350 workers without proper documentation. Investigations revealed a Chinese investor behind the employment of these undocumented workers, offering transportation services to industrial estates in exchange for brokerage fees.

The prompt action by the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya's special task force marks a pivotal response to address the growing concerns surrounding the legality and living conditions of migrant workers.

Uncovering the complex layer of issues at play, from undocumented labor to the environmental and social impact on surrounding communities, is a step towards resolving underlying issues that have long plagued the province.

Under whose radar?

Local officials must have been fully aware of these workers and the camp.

Working at local factories who offer employment to undocumented illegal migrants.
