Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Thailand to strengthen the two countries’ ties.

Srettha said he extended the invitation to the Russian president during their meeting in Beijing on Tuesday. It was the first meeting between the two leaders who are in China to attend an international forum on the Belt and Road initiative.

“I asked Russia to promote mutual trade in agricultural commodities and increase investments in Thailand. I also invited President Putin to visit Thailand to strengthen our relations,” Srettha said in a post on X social media platform.

Srettha also noted that more than one million Russians have visited Thailand this year and his Cabinet recently approved an extension of the period of visa-free stay for Russian tourists from 30 days to 90 days.

  • I can't believe the Thai PMs staff have not told him that there's an international warrant out for Putin's arrest. And Thailand is a signatory to the international court which issued the warrant.

  • I thought Putin was a wanted war crimes offender with an international arrest warrant out on him? Does Thailand not respect international law.

The sooner we get to a global world order instead of these tit for tat nation states the better. I personally don't consider myself a citizen of any particular country, I am a citizen of the World and I want a global passport system with free trade and movement for eveyrone.

Thats how it should be. Instead of judging each other by our differences in race, religion, ethnicity and the like - if instead we are all part of one global community then I think the likelihood of wars arising for arbitrary reasons would be greatly reduced.

The human race doesn't work that way. Never has, never will, until it implodes and destroys itself. Which will happen, sooner or later. No-one or nothing will miss us, especially nature which we'll no longer destroy. It's interesting to think that ants will outlast us.

If I remember Thailand wanted to buy the latest US fighter planes

This prime minister is leading Thailand into isolation by his actions.

Better known as the Belt and Road Forum. Or BARF.

Thailand is not a signatory of the Rome Statute thus the MF can come if invited however it all depends which countries will allow him to fly over.... Cambodia is a signatory

again, a byproduct of nation states exploiting other poorer states.

if we got rid of nation states, then people would have equal access to all those things you mentioned, no?

Nations are a figment of the humans imagination, just like religion and the tooth fairy..

They arent real, and nationalism is the indirect cause of millions upon millions of deaths worldwide.

Then why are you not relocating to Somalia, Ethiopia, Yemen, Syria, North Korea and any of the poorer countries in the world?

Surely at least one of them will have something you want.

Thai PM really wants to be part of the "rogue nations" group,  maybe not up to speed with current International affairs, or is he just say, "very naïve" to put it politely?

Thais are amongst the smartest most peaceful nations on earth.

One of the few countries who were not invaded and colonised by the brutal selfish Europeans.

It is better to friendly with everyone rather than fight them. They dont get involved in the other nations stupid wars. Ukraine has nothing to do with them. And the stupid religious war in Israel and Palestine with children being slaughtered over a stupid fight basically about the invsible bearded guy in the sky.

The tactics they displayed during WW2 are a perfect example why the clever Thais always win.

The French had been a problem trying to take more and more land in on Thailands eastern borders. WW2 broke out and the Thais did a deal with the Japanese to go and get that land back for them which they did. Then when the Japs looked like loing they quickly changed sides and won the war with the allies and keeping their extra land.

Every Songkran the kids and young adults fine tune their war games.

The Thais act in the best interest for Thailand and the Thai people. I wish my country would do the same instead of just following blindly the USA war machine.

If the farang war flares up to be WW3 with the stupid Americans and Russians the clever Thai PM is setting Thailand up to not be attacked as thailand is friends with everyone.

Very clever people the Thais.

Ha try and sell that one to the Cambodians who were pushed out of Phom Penh by Pol Pot who was then allowed by the good Thais to allow him to stay in Thailand. Sounds more like they have a yellow line running through their backs.

claim is somewhat dubious. In reality, Siam was ‘all but’ colonised starting in the late 19th century and well into the 20th century.

i find the Thais some what mentally challenged, very few know world history, school teaching below average, coruption out of control, thais have a long way to go other than  a third world country Thailand friends with everyone very naive statment, Thailand still has Disputes with Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and dont for get about the south with Muslims,

Incredible really... The PM is either a short sighted fool or has decided to openly go all in in defiance of the vast majority of the world opposing Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine (or maybe both). His choice. It's one thing to remain silent or neutral, and other to openly invite this ruthless and violent man to a cozy visit. So now Thailand wants to be in a minority list of countries that have hosted Vladimir since his ICC arrest warrant was issued (China, Kyrgyzstan and N. Korea). Embarrassing to the extreme. An ICC arrest warrant which Thailand will presumably tacitly (or openly) flaunt. For what... to alienate all those countries that make up the vast majority of the 24+ million tourist who aren't Russian. Just to suck-up to a madman (and presumably gain favor with their overlord China). The act of merely extending the invitation damages Thailand's image as a place people want to visit.

I am absolutely disgusted with Thailand sleazing up to two of the worst dictatorships on the planet, ruzzia and China. Money seems to beat morailty with Thais.

This only proves that Thailand’s politicians know diddly squat.

How does he, or his staff not know there is an international warrant out for War Crimes against Putin.

Also, Putin will now never leave Russia in fear (Russian trait that everybody is out to get them) of his plane being shot down.

He's in China.

Maybe but it just shows how tall the Thai PM is? Or just how small Putin is?🤣
