Not the time for a ceasefire in Gaza, says US, with Hamas still holding hostages

Palestinians injured in Israeli air raids arrive at Nasser Medical Hospital in Gaza Strip.

The US has said now is not the time for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, as the UN reports that some Palestinians who fled their homes in the north of Gaza have returned due to a lack of food and shelter in the south.

On Monday, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told CNN that Israel still had “work to do to go after Hamas leadership”, echoing comments from the US president, Joe Biden, that any discussions of a ceasefire could only take place if Hamas freed all its hostages in Gaza.

The statement from the White House was at odds with comments from UN and EU officials who on Monday called for a humanitarian pause in fighting so that aid could be delivered into Gaza.

The director of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza, Thomas White, told the BBC on Monday that a shortage of shelter, food and drinking water in the south had forced some residents to return to their homes in the north.

Israel delivered sweeping evacuation orders for almost half of Gaza’s 2.3 million people on 13 October. The UN estimates that almost two-thirds of Gaza’s population have been displaced over the last two weeks.

“People have left everything in the north … they’ve come to the south where they are struggling to find shelter, food is scarce, many people are having to drink unpotable water, so the situation in the south is dire,” White told the BBC.

Yes, Maybe some brave people can fly to Isreal, rent a car and go into Gaza and tell the Hamas

terrorist to quit holding those hostages. How about go to Doha Qatar and talk with the

Hamas leader, get him to call his soldiers and tell them to give up the hostages.

Oh not so simple a solution is it.  Did everyone forget that it is Hamas who are holding the hostages?

Once again america shows the world how "peaceloving" it is. How many Palestinians have to die before it's enough for America to apply it's claims of being on the side of angels in practical terms?

Apparently they are even training the israelis in urban warfare, as the israelis don't have any experience of attacking Palestinians that can fight back.

They are getting a whupping in public opinion with their antics in the UN security council. Even the UN secretary general has found a spine and called for a ceasefire, much to the israeli's displeasure.

It's somewhat ironic that Russia is now looking more reasonable than the US in the security council with the solitary US holdout against humanitarian relief for Gaza.

Did the Hamas call or ask for a ceasefire? Did it offer any reasonable terms? Why is it that you insist on rewarding terrorists? On not holding the Hamas regime responsible for its own actions? You seem perfectly able and willing to apply this concept in every other instance.

Wrong again

So much for there being a backlog.

In 1999, the US government signed a Memorandum of Understanding through which it committed to providing Israel with at least US$2.67 billion in military aid annually, for the following ten years; in 2009, the annual amount was raised to US$3 billion; and in 2019, the amount was raised again, now standing at a minimum of US$3.8 billion that the US is committed to providing Israel each year.

So, you really have no idea what a backlog is or what it means, got it.

Thank god you don't work in industry; you don't understand that when there is a war the backlog contains countries not at war and the countries like Ukraine and Israel get prioritized. There won't be a backlog for Israel as there has not been for the Ukraine..

Grow up for god's sake.

I don't trust anyone's #s, least so anything Israel would state.

2000-1000-500 ... what's the acceptable # of innocent children killed for you?  Or how many more?

Just think, a simple agreed upon cease fire would put that number closer to something acceptable to me.

Like -0- ... But hey, that's just me.

You seem to love letting the aggressors get away with their actions no matter what/where/when or who they are!

Apparently you're way off mark. And reluctant to address points raised. A link to general resource about the Gaza Strip? Seriously?

General resources ... really

Must have missed a few passages while reading:

"The blockade has devastated Gaza's economy and caused a nearly 50% poverty rate[18] and one of the highest unemployment rates in the world.  Living conditions in Gaza have led human rights organizations to continue to label it "an open-air prison"

"Characterization as open-air prison

Several rights groups have characterized the situation in Gaza as an "open-air prison", including the United Nations,[199] Human Rights Watch, and the Norwegian Refugee Council.  This characterizations was often cited by a number of human rights activists, politicians, and media news outlets reporting on the Gaza-Israel conflict and the wider Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Former British Prime Minister David Cameron,[207] US Senator Bernie Sanders,[208] former Israeli diplomat Gideon Levy, and Israeli historian Ilan Pappe have endorsed this characterization as well.

In 2022, Human Rights Watch issued a report on the situation in the Gaza Strip, which it called an "open-air prison" due to the blockade and held Israel responsible as the occupying power, and to a lesser degree Egypt, which has restricted movement of Palestinians through its border. The report highlighted how this blockade has led to humanitarian crises, namely shortages of essential supplies, limited access to healthcare, and high levels of poverty and unemployment among the Palestinian population in Gaza."

No Chance I will read anything you recommend!

Same way as you said above "I don't trust anyone's #s, least so anything Israel would state."

PS;  Comments and posts like yours and those of the other like "minded" appeasers prove that ignorance really is bliss, to them!
