I just have a very very bad feeling

I am a type of person that used to laff at the old guys saying Thailand has changed.

Now I am that guy.

I just have a feeling something is really off, not just with Thailand, but the whole damn world.

My wife who has been employed from a foreign company working from home has barely been able to close any sales. This is unheard off for her and her business.

She was also contacted by her old (Japanese) company to come back and work for them because since she left they had zero sales. They even offered her a promotion. However, I really think she may fail with her great comeback as the factories and distributors seem broke, only set on buying cheap parts from China.... which in all fairness can now compete with most of the products from Japan and Europe.

I just think there will be some major financial events next year that will perhaps change the rules on how expats live in Thailand. I am not simply talking about the new tax law in Thailand. I am willing to go as far to say that pensions will not be paid unless you are a resident of your country or some kind of reporting requirement to your government, similar to 90 days here in Thailand.

Whatever happens, I think I will be better off back home if $hit hits the fan.

Yes, I suppose I won't be able to "attach myself to my wife's tax return".

And please spare me the obvious ones about door hitting me on derriere.

I wouldn't call it a "depression". Because the whole economic system is being "re-structured".  Capitalism as we know it may cease to exist and be replaced by a more socialist-capitalist mix

Depends where "back home" is.

Depends on whether one is a glass half empty or glass half full person.

We may be heading into a depression, IMO  I  am well equipped with cash if it is.

Because cash in a bank may be difficult to access.

I remember a few years back I failed one security question over the phone when calling customer service. They completely blocked my account. No deposits, no withdrawals, no nothing. To reopen my account I was told I have to see someone at the branch in person. I flew back to home just so I could get my money.

There may be more and more security measures in the future. For your protection, of course.

Press 1 if you are calling outside United States.

Because the whole economic system is being "re-structured".

Capitalism as we know it may cease to exist and be replaced by a more socialist-capitalist mix of some sort.

Hence the WEF slogan "you will own nothing" by the Great Reset date of 2030.

It's only a "depression" if you use the current economy as a reference point.

Great Reset is probably more accurate than calling it a depression or recession.

The goal posts are changing radically.

You will own nothing implies that money will be less important in society.

So you may have less, and collectively most people may have less. But having less will become more normalized than it is now, where it is seen as poverty if you don't drive a 50K car.

Tough concept to grasp.

Maybe that's it.

I just remembered that article about "carbon passports" and travel restrictions that may be coming.

That will be a major barrier for any expat living in Thailand if that ever gets approved.

IMO the bans on travel during COVID are unlikely to happen again, every country saw what it did to their national airlines.

I doubt there will be carbon passports, AFAIK nobody has worked out how to fly passenger aircraft with batteries.

Depends what kind of pension you have, if it's a government one - they can do whatever they want and you can't do anything about it, but if it's a private pension then they can't retroactively amend the terms.

I'm not sure why you're freaking out- the US is almost completely over the minor recession it experienced, and when it charges forward it will pull the entire world with it. The only thing that could possibly spoil that is a large-scale war - something that's very unlikely to happen in an election year.

None of this is going to happen. It's insane to think people will accept carbon passports as they represent a huge infringement on personal liberty and most likely unconstitutional in most countries. And that is assuming a government is crazy enough to even try it - there's zero chance my home country will, and Thailand with it's reliance on tourism... are they going to accept it? :cheesy:

So what is it, are they almost over it, or is it just to start?

Sounds like a weather report, today we gonna have sunshine with showers.

You think the rest of the world give a damn about when it are elections in the US? If the Russians - Chinese want to start a war, the last thing they gonna do is ask the dement guy in the White House ask for permission

What's unconstitutional? Just like driver's license, passport is a privilege, not a right.

Won't happen.  It could be your mind, when you lose a sense of reality

Yes, it could happen.

But probably not a good idea to base your life decisions on speculation.

If they make new rules, then you can decide to change where to live.

Try to live in the moment and enjoy your life.

They won't do anything overnight. You'll hear about it in the news.

That whole 'you will own nothing and be happy' thing is a perfect example of a cynical distortion of what was said by those who gain in doing so. That comment was a specific discussion about the new concept of renting or sharing rather than buying - for things like cars, and stuff in the house, etc - it was not saying that for economic reasons you won't have the dollars to buy things and will somehow be happy to live like a serf or similar.

I don't see signs of an impending doom in terms of the economy where I sit in Australia. There's always concerns of course.

Time will tell but I think the tax thing won't be as bad as some people think -  if it is it would be a bureaucratic nightmare for the Thai government that would be really difficult to enforce. Could be wrong of course.

As someone who is going to spend a fair bit of time there in six months or so things are looking up.

@celcius

Change your meds... "the sky is falling... the sky is falling" is a fairy tale

@Celsius What are the risks that scare you most?

War with China or Russia?

Recession?

Climate Change?

Financial markets collapse?

Global Pandemic?

I suspect your OP is more to do with the state of your mind and your marriage.

As stoner suggested, smoke some cannabis, drink some wine, forget your troubles and the world will look a better place.

This is pretty typical narcissism; things aren't going my way so the whole world is doomed and so I will panic and run back to my home country.

What goes up, must go down. Sales is a tough job.

Your concerns are justified. I certainly don't have any answers.  Many others feel the same way.

I think his concerns are valid.

If/when Trump comes back he'll wreck US and big part of the world.

In the EU we just saw one nut from Hungary stopped everything...

Thailand has way too much rules to cope if you are not willing to be a worm....
