Missing British artist Millie Young is 'believed to be trapped inside' sunken tour vessel that is now 180ft beneath the waves after capsizing off Thailand

Rescue teams believe missing British artist Millie Young is trapped inside the vessel she was on when it capsized off the coast of Thailand last week.

  • Millie Young disappeared on December 23 after the boat she was on capsized
  • Rescuers have kept up searches for the missing artist originally from Brighton
  •

A helicopter and dozens of ships have spent days following ocean currents around the Surin Islands where the ship sank, but have not found anything to help in their search for Ms Young, who disappeared on December 23.

The ship's cook Samniang Chaichana, 67, is also thought to have been trapped on board when the ship sank to a depth of 180ft while Ms Young was enjoying a dream adventure with friends.

Pichet Songtan, spokesman for Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre (Thai-MECC), said: 'The rescue committee is working to find the sunken ship as quickly as possible. We believe that the missing people are trapped inside.'

The Reggae Queen left Thap Lamu Pier on the mainland in the afternoon of December 22, carrying 13 tourists and five crew members.

Songtan explained how the ship was forced to stop en route as 'the waves were so strong'.

Waves 'more than three metres high' slapped against the side of the ship, with too much being taken on for the waste water pump to remove. Crew woke the passengers and arranged life rafts for evacuation before the ship sank.

On Christmas Day, it was reported an inflatable life raft had been found, 20 nautical miles away from where the ship went down.

I suppose checking the forecast before sailing was out of the question? But that might have meant refunding ticket money if they didn't sail.

  • She?

I hope the helicopter and dozens of boats were searching the waters for my souls than just her.

That's sad, she's from my home town.

I knew her at Mahidol. Sad and horrible way to die.

So 18 on board.....two seemingly went down with the ship.....what happened to the rest?

A nearby ship picked them up.

If she and the cook are trapped inside the sunken vessel let's hope that their removal will be more successful than the navy's attempt to recover those trapped in their ship that capsized due to rough seas.

Why did the boats go out? The forecast predicted STRONG WINDS AND ROUG WAVES due to the weather conditions.

If I remember correctly it was about the same time last year that the Thai naval vessel went down off Bang Saphan.
RIP

So they still haven't sent divers down to check TIT.

Not an accident... this was preventable.

The reporting on this story seems filled with inconsistencies. There is this:

Quote

"At around 4 am, the waves were more than three meters high, then the water began to wash into the boat. The waste water pump in the boat could not remove the waste water. Therefore, the ship's officers were asked to wake up all the sleeping tourists, along with arranging life rafts for evacuation before the ship sank.

"The ship floated on the waves for more than three hours until another boat found it and rescued the group at around 9am."  https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/missing-brit-tourist-believed-trapped-31755089

That boat also looks top heavy, there is hardly any depth to the hull compared to the height of the superstructure.  No engineer, just what I see.

I agree, it looks more like a river boat to me. I spent many years working on dive boats as a dive guide. I certainly would not have put to sea on a tub like that. It has all hallmarks on an overloaded pick up. An accident waiting to happen.

Put your scuba tank on then  ,Brian, don't worry that 180 feet is below the depth limit for safe diving. And what's the hurry,do you think this is still a rescue situation?

any Thai with a boat can take tourists/passengers damn the torpedoes

Missing British artist Millie Young is 'believed to be trapped inside' sunken tour vessel that is now 180ft beneath the waves after capsizing off Thailand

She is not trapped, her body is. Not difficult to say "The body of missing British artist Millie Young is 'believed to be trapped inside' sunken tour vessel that is now 180ft beneath the waves after capsizing off Thailand".

Very poorly witten headline from I suggest an under educated person.

They haven't even found it yet! 'Navy chiefs said they will now use sonar to find the wreckage of the Reggae Queen',

180 feet is too deep for regular SCUBA divers anyway. Only trained mixed gas technical divers can go that deep. I assume the RTN has them available, but I don't know for sure.

You don't know that she's dead.  Just making assumptions.

Would you guys be whinging if it was Liz Hurley look alike?

After 5 days underwater at a depth of 180 feet, I think it's about 99.99% certain that no-one still on that ship is alive.

Screw relying on tour operator or captain to decide if safe to sail.  I'd verify the forecast myself, and with 2-3 meter waves forecast, you ain't getting me on a 'boat', unless it's a cruise 'ship'.

Our personal safety is our personal responsibility.

When I used to take govt buses, I'd do a walk around, make sure they aren't running on maypops :giggle:

Well send your nitpicking criticism about the 'very poorly WITTEN headline' to the Daily Mail, Because that's were it came from.

An accident is something that typically happens due to unforeseen circumstances. In this particular case the weather forecast was poor, and they decided to go out anyway, so this was not an accident on the part of the captain. This was willful malfeasance, and likely an unwillingness to refund ticket prices and cancel the trip.

Amazing, that they could not all get to rescue rafts, it must have gone down quickly. A sad thing is loss of life and to many Thai boats sink, collide and kill tourists, hello, where is the safety checks on vessels and checks on crew and there experience, just cowboys, thinking it won't happen to me, Satu,
