Convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra returned to Thailand to face legal consequences because he is a peacemaker who wants to see reconciliation in Thailand, Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong claimed in parliament during the debate on the government’s budget bill on Wednesday.

He defended the Corrections Department‘s issuance of a ministerial regulation to allow convicts to serve their terms outside prison, saying that a regulation on the same matter was issued three years ago, but the Corrections Department only acted on it last year.

He insisted that the regulation was not designed to benefit Thaksin specifically, but all qualified convicts, adding that prison is not a place in which to kill or torture convicts and any inmate who is sick is entitled to be treated in hospitals outside the prison.

Regarding the question over whether Thaksin is actually ill, Tawee said that, although he has not visited Thaksin at the Police General Hospital, doctors there have confirmed that the former prime minister is suffering from numerous illnesses.

As I see it, Thailand's problem is that there's too many snouts in the trough and not enough left over for real development.  Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, the strongest Asian economies were all started down the road to prosperity by a crooked guy who had the strength to control unfettered access to the trough.  (Edit:  I'd add Japan, too.  But I don't think MacArthur was crooked)   Made their families immensely wealthy, but their countries, too.

Is there anyone alive that could do that for Thailand?  Thaksin is the only one I know of, with the stones, the cunning, and the business experience to do it.

Whether he will (would?) or not, I have no clue.   My stint in Thailand started after he was ousted, and a year or two before Yingluck got couped out the door.  I'd hope he would try to leave a favorable legacy in his remaining years.

I wonder how much was in this guy's brown envelope. Thailand is such a pathetically corrupt country.

Maybe that was the mission given to Thaksin in exchange for his freedom....

From a paid servant of Thaksin who is actually the most divisive character in Thai politics in the last 30 years. How many people have been killed or committed suicide because of him and his nominee sister?

I remember his remarks after one election about provinces that didn't elect his party's MPs having to go to the back of the queue for budget allocation.

Always divisive, always arrogant.

Corrections panel to consider rules for convicts to serve terms outside prison

image.jpeg

The Justice Ministry will call a meeting of the corrections committee on January 11th, to consider the rules for screening convicts who are qualified to serve their remaining terms outside a prison, according to a well-informed source in the Justice Ministry.

The rules were drafted by an 8-member panel, led by Chutarut Chintakanon, deputy director-general of the Corrections Department.

The source disclosed that the panel has come under pressure, through political interference, to draft the rules in the favour of individuals, forcing some panel members to take leave.

The source said that the rules will be in line international standards, similar to those applicable to pro-democracy Myanmar leader Aung San Suu-Kyi, who was moved from prison to house arrest in Myanmar, wearing a monitoring ankle bracelet.

If a convicted criminal is the only one who can acct as a peacemaker and reconcile Thailand then it's a totally screwed up country.

REMAINING terms.... now there's a thing.

Does doing a couple of hours qualify as serving some time?

But they didn't start out that way.  In each case, a ruthless (corrupt) strongman started them down that path.  I'm not saying Thaksin's that guy for Thailand.  I don't know that much about his reign.  But I sure don't see anyone else that could.

And a small glimmer of hope is better than no hope at all.

He was convicted for corruption, largely related to a piece of land his wife purchased, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

How many of the average Joes have been afforded this privilege of passage out of the penal system and into medical care with such lavish trimmings?

In certain sense I would agree. Thaksin indeed got the ability to reconcile the country and stop fighting between different political groups. And even 3 of 10 Baht would go into his own pockets he got visions where this country's path will lead.

However, without the young generation represented by Pita we'll have a stalemate. So we'll see Thaksin's willingness to bring this country forward next. You mentioned other opponents: they are NO kingdoms. And on this point Ill stop.🙏

The only division around this issue is that the vast majority of Thais are indifferent to the ongoing circus.

The HiSo of Bangkok and the fulminating farang on here need their red meat in order to satiate their hatred for an old man who they have never met and who has had no negative impact on their lives.
