Justice minister praises Thaksin as a “peacemaker”

Featured Replies

Love him or hate him he gave Thailand the electronic backbone that we all enjoy today

Australian internet doesn't rate compared to what he put in place.

A gofundme for a bronze statue would be well in order

  • As I see it, Thailand's problem is that there's too many snouts in the trough and not enough left over for real development.  Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, the strongest Asian economies were all started d

Convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra returned to Thailand to face legal consequences because he is a peacemaker who wants to see reconciliation in Thailand, Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong claimed in parliament during the debate on the government’s budget bill on Wednesday.

Is Sodsong related to Johnson by any chance?

I'm always amused how a Thai politician can use the title Justice Minister with a straight face given that they are inevitably as crooked as you can get, overseeing a strata of crooks and corruption from the bottom to the top.

The only division around this issue is that the vast majority of Thais are indifferent to the ongoing circus.

Have you ever spoken to a Thai? Do you read Thai media? Clearly neither of those.

How many of the average Joes have been afforded this privilege of passage out of the penal system and into medical care with such lavish trimmings?

How many average Joes could get on Facebook or Instagram, call out hundreds of thousands of protestors, and actually have them show up?

The Justice Ministry will call a meeting of the corrections committee on January 11th, to consider the rules for screening convicts who are qualified to serve their remaining terms outside a prison, according to a well-informed source in the Justice Ministry.

Were the rules and regs issued 3 years ago, or are they pending for next week?

You can fool some of the people some of time but not all of the people all of time. Except for here perhaps.

He was convicted for corruption, largely related to a piece of land his wife purchased, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

As per usual with high profile wealthy folks the land purchase / transfer was a feature of the evening news on that day.

Numerous Gov't officials and Khun Pojaman in attendance. Just prior it had been mentioned that the land purchase/transfer was illegal, and the shocked looks on the faces of the gov't officials revealed their disgust.

The absence of colour shirts demonstrations and the military subdued since Thaksin's return, I will agree with #Red. The government coalition has given Thailand the next 4 years of peace after 2 decades of turmoil and economic distress.

So it's taken 15 years to decide Thaksin is a peacemaker.

They were all howling for his blood two years ago, asking why he couldn't be deported to serve his sentence.

Spineless sycophants.

He defended the Corrections Department‘s issuance of a ministerial regulation to allow convicts to serve their terms outside prison, saying that a regulation on the same matter was issued three years ago, but the Corrections Department only acted on it last year.

He insisted that the regulation was not designed to benefit Thaksin specifically, but all qualified convicts, adding that prison is not a place in which to kill or torture convicts and any inmate who is sick is entitled to be treated in hospitals outside the prison.

Regarding the question over whether Thaksin is actually ill, Tawee said that, although he has not visited Thaksin at the Police General Hospital, doctors there have confirmed that the former prime minister is suffering from numerous illnesses.

He's been practicing in the mirror to say this without laughing or getting a red face!

Well done, you pulled it off shamelessly.

It is the typical contempt for the Thai electorate we see from the same farangs that support military coups and disenfranchisement of the Thai people.

That they are 'too stupid to vote correctly', 'only vote for money' or 'need a strong leader' are all too familiar tropes which are trotted out to justify their ill opinions.

The Red Shirts were a direct response to the Yellow Shirts, the 2006 coup and the judicial coup in 2008.

Cause, and effect.

And the justice minister is a peace taker.

".............doctors there have confirmed that the former prime minister is suffering from numerous illnesses."

Which seem to have manifested themselves after the party he attended the day before his return?

So, practice your own medicine, if that true (which it's not) you also have no right to make your comments just above!

Yes, that's some proof. Thanks.

But they also tried to frame some British idiot, who was heard saying similar crap...

I guess you you know that Thai politics are just one giant excrementstorm, where what you see (hear) is definitely not what you'll get.

The HiSo of Bangkok and the fulminating farang on here need their red meat in order to satiate their hatred for an old man who they have never met and who has had no negative impact on their lives.

I feel so sorry for you
